Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Of course the AZ vaccine works. It works fine for younger age groups. And it also, apparently after 2 jabs, produces spike specific antibodies. The question remains about how much protection it offers.

It's 100% proven - across all test ages - to stop serious illness.

The issue is infection but vaccines don't always 100% prevents infection, do they? In fact, a lot don't?

... because we could have 3 million people properly vaccinated by now (if the share of 1st / 2nd doses was the same as the Israelis) - this would still mean tens / hundreds of thousands of people would be getting their first dose every day, but we'd have many more of the most vulnerable better protected. We'd also (and this is a point that cannot be overstated) actually be using the Pfizer vaccine in the way they've repeatedly told us it should be used.
As we know, the reason it's gone from 3 weeks to 3 months is because that nobhead Johnson again turned this country into the killing fields by negelcting to lockdown and lockdown properly. That meant the vaccine programme was diluted.

All vaccines so far should have been in the arms of over-80s - easily the most in danger group.

Yes, but let's be careful of the size of the testing group for over-65s. Just 300 took the vaccine and at a time of low infection and without the variants.

What about all those healthcare workers dying, and then also passing it on to other patients?

Or workers in care homes who aren't actually imprisoned in them so have lives of their own and kids to care for and may well pick it up, be asymptomatic, and go into a care home and spread it to all the old dears?

They shouldn't be prioritised?

Witty was quite clear on the science the other week. Now I fully expect some vaccine experts to dismiss him as a stooge and a clown, but frankly, I would rather go with the scientists than the internet.

The AZ first jab gives more protection than the usual flu jab does against flu. Yet I dont remember any crying about that.

Denmark are. Germany very seriously considered it.

I'm more inclined, given the situation we're in, to just get as many people as much protection as possible.

I really don't see the issue with AZ. Authorised on 4-12 still allows scope for 12 week spacing. The country is in lockdown and rates are going down and it looks like deaths might start to follow. So we'll have to stay in lockdown while the roll out continues but we're getting people protection.

I agree on Pfizer that we should just stay at 3 weeks or go 6 weeks like Denmark have.

I didn't know this until checking it on that page I just posted, but the Denmark second dose % is quite a bit higher proportionally than ours (3.2% of population with first dose / 1.05% with second vs our 12.34% of population with first dose vs 0.71% with second)

Denmark are using 6-week spacing with the Pfizer jab I believe.

Oh, and France are, too.

just tried out the queue calculator here https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/vaccine-queue-uk

Probably different times for different areas but it gives me an idea when I can expect a letter for the jab
Not sure on the uptake rate though as they based this on the flu job, I think loads will have this that didn't have the flu one

Result:
Based on your profile, you are in priority Group 8, and there are between 15,580,035 and 18,693,495 people in front of you in the queue for a first dose of COVID vaccine across the UK.
Given a vaccination rate of 2,645,401 a week and an uptake of 70.6%, you should expect to receive your first dose of vaccine between 23/04/2021 and 10/05/2021.

You should then get your second dose by between 16/07/2021 and 02/08/2021.

The difficulty though is that almost every other country are not doing what we are, and there is quite a bit of scientific (and medical) discomfort at it.

which is still two weeks too long, but more sensible than what we are doing (I think)

Yeah like I said I think we should do 3 weeks but as a halfway house go six weeks and that'd be an improvement.

I see no issue with using AZ over longer time as it's been tested.

Lets face it, we have never ever had to do this, so no one really knows.

I am a simple fella, but the fact that 1 dose of AZ improves things, so getting the max number of folk at that makes sense to me.
