It was political.

Covering their backs after placing the most populous area of the country into Tier 2 at the start of December?

I'll never forget or forgive that, and I won't forget or forgive nobody on the other side of the political divide or anyone in the London-based media calling it out.

Self-serving tossers.

Must admit I'm surprised there's so far not a north/south divide on this. Although unfortunately there's a fair bit of developing evidence that those with money have managed to jump the queue a bit.

Small sample size I know, but everybody who I know of/am related to or my close friends are related to who qualify for the vaccine already have now had their first dose, plus extras (like my aunt who was given it so it didn't expire on the day).

Not all over 80 or in the vulnerable group either - they just live in places where clearly they've now got those first priority groups done so they're moving onto the next.

Only my housemate has had the second jab so far, like, but she got her first one before Christmas. Think my nan is booked in for hers at the end of March/start of April (so 10-12 weeks)

I don’t want a slanging match, but I have fears about how they are prioritising these vaccines! 85 year olds that have outlived their life expectancy shouldn’t be getting it before 45 year olds that have multiple comorbidities and four children to bring up!

They did delay, trying to negotiate better prices, they didn’t even order the Pfizer one until November.

” Sahin, who founded BioNtech with his wife, Özlem Türeci, – the firm’s chief medical officer – said the situation was “not rosy” as the EU had wrongly assumed several different vaccines would be ready at once, so spread its orders.

“The assumption was that many other companies would come up with their vaccines,” Şahin said. “It would seem that the impression was: ‘We’ll get enough, it won’t be so bad, and we have this under control.’ It surprised me.”

Türeci told the magazine the EU had assumed there would be “a basket of different suppliers” to choose from. “Such an approach makes sense. But then at some point it became clear that many would be unable to deliver so quickly,” she said. “By that time it was too late to make up for under-ordering.”

The US ordered 600m doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine in July, while the EU waited until November to order half as many. Şahin said the firms were now working flat-out to increase production and “fill a hole due to a lack of other approved vaccines”....

I think they have a broad range of agreements with all the leading vaccines mate. Built into the initial deals were clauses to increase their purchase if they decided and vaccines proved successful, all those clauses have been activated for the vaccines given EMA approval. The issue I think for the whole world isn’t quantity it’s supply.

I still think it’s the right approach, especially with Jansen and Curevac coming online shortly, it’s a very even purchasing model of each vaccine.

Indeed. But if I order first, and pay a higher price who gets the first deliveries.....

It's simple - 80+ year olds die from it more and get severely sick from it more, overloading the NHS.

If you take them out to safety first, the NHS isn't overloaded and care is better for everyone else.

I don't have a problem with vaccinating those 50 to 100 times more likely of dying of the virus personally.

I think it was more the UK regulator granted emergency approval mate, rather then who ordered or payed more.

If I was looking at it from a rigours safety point of view, the Oxford team rushed things a tad and as such their initial finding were sketchy and needed revision. They wouldn’t have met European safety standards initially, they only applied themselves for approval in the EU a couple of weeks ago, knowing this. To be honest I wouldn’t be rushing to take it unless they had or they do get that approval.

Im not sure if the problems effecting the supply of the EU deliveries will effect the UK going forward, do you know? as you say the market place might get very crowded very soon.

Leave it to the NHS and GP surgeries mate.

They have the data.

Fair enough mate, but at the moment I’m hearing and seeing 85 year old Grandpa Joe being prioritised over 45 year old mothers with several comorbidities. I think that’s wrong!

Honestly, Grandpa Joe has already lived twice as long as some very vulnerable mothers that have children! I don’t agree with what I’m seeing in reality.
