I
I’m sure I heard on the telly last night loads of vaccinated US healthcare workers have been given tickets to the Superbowl in two weeks.
I have read that too. It is a very nice gesture! We need to continue finding ways to express our thanks to healthcare workers after everything they have been going through the past year.

@roydo is right. 7,500 have been allocated to healthcare workers most of them will come from the Tampa Bay area and central Florida. But all 32 NFL teams have been giving the opportunity to choose some workers from their cities to attend the game. There will be another 14,500 people attending in a stadium for 66,000.

I think that article is a little bit naughty too in places. Absolutely no evidence of it being some kind of revenge bid for Brexit so a bit irresponsible to make that claim. The explanation is further down the article that the member states all signed a purchase agreement indicating nothing is shipped until EMA approval.

It does also seem the Belgian PM's comments were made a month or so ago about pfizer: https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2020/12/30/belgian-pm-covid/

Not sure what it has to do with Brexit to be honest.

The EU apparently funded part of the development and backed AZ in particular in the development of the Oxford/AZ vaccine. A significant quantity of the vaccine is apparently manufactured and produced in EU member states. Last week AZ informed the EU that it had to reduce its planned EU delivery in the first quarter by as much as 60%.

A meeting was held between the EU & AZ earlier today, were the EU spoke of putting sanctions or maybe rather bueratric red tape on AZ exporting from the EU unless the EU order is met as a priority. Essentially they are saying any vaccine produced in the EU, that leaves the EU for export - will be subject to the EU requiring to be notified and reasons explained as to why its going to a "non -EU" country as opposed to the EU and if found in breach of the EU contract sanctions and legal proceedings will be taken.

Another meeting is planned tonight as AZ could not provide specific assurances on the above today.

Does seem a bit strange that all 3 vaccine providers are reporting delays with shipments to the EU.

Eu doing its usual knee jerk bullying because they delayed the initial orders. They still haven’t even approved it yet. They are looking at the U.K. jab numbers, about 7 million in total and looking for ways to cover their backs from criticism...nothing to see here, move along.....

Not sure they delayed mate, they agreed contracts last summer. It hasn't been approved yet for sure - Friday i believe.

The UK definitely ahead of the game on the roll out, the one dose strategy and having three vaccines - is definitely a shot in the arm, pardon the pun.

Im keeping an eye on the UK numbers alright, im hoping to see 7 mill roll out begin to make a dent in rates of infection any day now, like in the US and Israil - might be getting there today, if the 20k rate holds tomorrow, fingers crossed.

They did delay, trying to negotiate better prices, they didn’t even order the Pfizer one until November.

” Sahin, who founded BioNtech with his wife, Özlem Türeci, – the firm’s chief medical officer – said the situation was “not rosy” as the EU had wrongly assumed several different vaccines would be ready at once, so spread its orders.

“The assumption was that many other companies would come up with their vaccines,” Şahin said. “It would seem that the impression was: ‘We’ll get enough, it won’t be so bad, and we have this under control.’ It surprised me.”

Türeci told the magazine the EU had assumed there would be “a basket of different suppliers” to choose from. “Such an approach makes sense. But then at some point it became clear that many would be unable to deliver so quickly,” she said. “By that time it was too late to make up for under-ordering.”

The US ordered 600m doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine in July, while the EU waited until November to order half as many. Şahin said the firms were now working flat-out to increase production and “fill a hole due to a lack of other approved vaccines”....

I don’t believe the EU funded any part of the Oxford development. They did however do a deal with AZ regarding ramping up production, I believe, but I may be wrong....
