Isn't there supposed to be evidence that the strain infected people in an Australian quarantine hotel via the air conditioning?
All versions can transfer by air mate, there is evidence of that very early on. There was a study of a coffee shop somewhere in Asia months ago with a similar situation.

The 70% was a complete fabrication mate. They made it up based on the numbers jumping quite a lot in Kent/London but the numbers increaser massively as they were in tier 2.

Look at the increase in Liverpool City Region over the past 3 weeks. Its exploded and this 'variant' isn't even present here.

Totally agree there will be many variants and in reality they won't be any difference in how effective they are in transmitting. It will all come down to the definition of contact there is between people, in winter we spend more time indoors easier for viruses to transmit.

Biggest breeding and spreading factory for many viruses will be schools and such like, the younger age group the better for the virus. Anyone who actually parented a child will recognise regulatory of illness brought into the family home that coincides with school terms. Why these staff are not front line to be vaccinated is pure negligence.

London and South East weren't placed into Tier 3 at the start of December.

They should have been.

It's the most populous area in the country and, as winter hit, there were crowds of people being able to do stuff.

There's obviously a new variant, but it would have had nowhere near the impact that it did had that decison to place London and the SE in Tier 2 not been made.

And it probably would have saved 1000s of lives.

Variant this and variant that. They are baked into any virus development. They were there in the summer and autumn. Variants - lots of them. The difference is that we are now in winter, and virus infections grow exponentially in the winter and this Covid19 virus is no exception, except it's more deadly and having more effect - and the only way we wouldn't be in this situation is if the government had locked down nationally late autumn as they were advised to do.

That is about the top and bottom of this.

Wife's sister works in a care home. Been off for 5 days. Her unit received 5 OAPs from hospital just before she went off. Back in today. 2 back in hospital with covid. 2 workers now tested postve with covid. Dosnt look like they have any lessons from earlier in the year.

Disgraceful, I seen on GMB this morning that they are sending people back to carehomes from hospitals.

What can go wrong? I'm no virologist but sending COVID patients to nursing homes doesn't seem like the best decision. Couldn't they use hotels or something? I know staffing is an issue but literally anywhere else is a better option.

To be honest many people I face in my work role have not swallowed this mantra, sure they are aware of dangers and what they should do stay at home etc. But a super spreading COVID, no more than the others previous variants.
It was always outrageous that some here wanted in the early days a non political thread on this virus, what with a Tory Government, who were they trying to kid...

The 1918 virus mutated 3 times, 2nd was the worst, it also merged with a bird or swine variants over the 20th century

...Yes, we can prepare, but with the realization that no amount of hand washing, hand wringing, public education, or gauze masks will do the trick. The keystone of influenza prevention is vaccination.

Also...gist; there are 16 variants...HN viruses...with added Antigens - and the only way to protect is have vaccines of all known varients pre made and on hand

Over to you Big Pharma and Big Govts

Just sayin like

There's so much more than vaccines that can end the colossal scale of fatalities - human behaviour. And that comes from directives and a change of culture...something western governments, and the major Anglo-Saxon societies in particular, cant or wont get to grips with. Just look at the nations in south east Asia. They have managed this crisis differntly and more successfully.

We need to adapt to the situation.
