Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

By the time @BlueToff gets it, we will have %60 of the population either infected or vaccinated, so sure he should get when he can, but it won't be VITAL anymore that he and the likes of him get it. It is easy as that.

I will get it, btw.

I hate needles and I'll pass out, but of course I'll get the thing - as soon as it is available to me. But the only reason I'd be in a priority group is if I was a key worker (I'm not) or they were doing it in reverse - i.e. vaccinating the general pop first and then the vulnerable groups, who would have to shield longer, after.

Those 'weirdos' were instructed by their government to stay indoors until late summer; then they offered no reassurance to them to come out again.

No, I'm not on about people who had to shield from March.

I'm talking about people - perfectly healthy people - who since Feb have voluntarily chosen not to leave the house. At all. And instead focus all of their attention on social media outrage.

There's plenty of them.

That's completely different to the vulnerable groups who have had to shield - which in itself is horrid and I feel massively for people who have had to go through this alone.

You stated above "once people who need it are vaccinated".

That sounds like you dont see this needs a universal take up.

In relative terms: Oxord-AstraZenica has failed and this government have backed the wrong horse. Again.

That's not to say, though, that particular vaccine cant help - it can. It will, however, cause a lot of 'shopping around'.

I do, but it has to be rolled out in stages doesn't it. I mean it'd be great if it wasn't, if we could all turn up in the space of a week and get one, but that isn't going to happen.

And long-term there's going to be much, much worse impact on everyone's lives if they keep stuff locked down.

So while everyone should get it as soon as they can (as soon as it is available to them), if we're in a state of lockdown by March/April, when you could have pretty much anyone who could die from this vaccinated, plus the frontline workers, then that just doesn't seem right.

I'm not saying that there'll be 'normality'. I don't expect I'll be able to go to a gig or a match by then, but it'd be nice to be able to go round to see my mates, or go to the pub or a coffee shop and not have to jump up and down with a mask on. You know, simple, little things.

Its not new news UK was ill prepared. As highlighted in Exercise Cygnus 2016.

And the downgrading of PPE has helped in making things look better.

Right, where did I say it was new news? I fully understand that the NHS has been crippled by under/miss-funding.

I'm going off what someone who works in the wards day in, day out, says (and thankfully their death rate is going down with the patients, because they know how to treat this).

The PPE they (they being the Sheffield Hallam trust, in this case) have is working.

They said the 2 dose method can get effectiveness of 90%. Broadly similar to the others. And this one can be stored under more normal methods.

I'm also pretty sure I heard the others required two doses as well, so not sure why this one requiring two doses would suddenly be a surprise or a problem.

So no I don't really agree with your assessment, as much as I am shocked to say that lol

I dont think that's right.

The OAZ 90pc figure is derived from a small sub-set of trials, so less certain to be 90pc than the others.

"There is also intriguing data that suggests perfecting the dose could increase protection up to 90%."

"When volunteers were given two "high" doses the protection was 62%, but this rose to 90% when people were given a "low" dose followed by a high one."

I am no expert, just reporting what I read. No idea if it's accurate or not. I still think the news on this vaccine sounds reasonably positive.

Because weirdos who have been locked in their homes since February want you to think this.

Maybe people should be allowed to choose.

My grandma lives alone, has dementia and the only form of contact she's had in the last month has been my mum as that's the support bubble. I've seen her through the window when I've popped past on my bike.

There's no chance we're leaving her alone on Christmas day

You’re spot on with the term “ weirdo “ as it perfectly describes my mate.

Perfectly healthy, hasn’t been out since late February, due to convincing himself that Armageddon is outside his front door.

The last time I tried to get him out, he simply stated that “ he wasn’t comfortable “ leaving the house.

The next excuse wil undoubtedly be, that he’s not prepared to leave the house until the vaccine is proven to work.

All this is due to reading online lunacy and doom and gloom cherry picked by the media.

So by my reckoning I may see him this time next year.

I’m sure there’s plenty like this across the country- weirdos.

There's been safe and obviously socially conscious - but then there's that extreme.

I know somebody exactly like your mate too, a guy I used to work with.

Admittedly, he must be about 20 stone, but he wasn't helping himself by just sitting inside all summer.

As far as I know - as he broadcasts his entire existence on Twitter - he's been out maybe once or twice for an actual walk (this is his words as of a few weeks ago).

Feel harsh but, y'know, if he'd maybe go on more walks, the odd run, he wouldn't feel such a need to lock himself away for the rest of time.
