Incidentally, it's a pity that COVID isn't somewhat more explicit about only killing utter knobheads. It takes the subtle approach, but still leaves too many of them intact to hurt my brain. To be honest, if Dave wasn't so anti-pasties, I'd be somewhat more supportive of his Platonic dreams of a sophisticated ruling class taking nice decisions without the serfs muddying the gene pool with their conspiracy theories and lack of potty training at the baths.

Not a popular opinion, but oh well, not all the people out there are right wingers. I know at least two people who are socialist/social liberal. They are ok with logical restrictions but they also demand more public input when taking decisions. Putting economy always ahead drives them crazy.

Prof Whitty also said that even though different parts of the UK were seeing cases rising at different rates, and even though some age groups are affected more than others, the evolving situation "is all of our problem".
He added that evidence from other countries showed infections were "not staying just in the younger age groups" but were "moving up the age bands".
He said mortality rates from Covid-19 were "significantly greater" than seasonal flu, which killed around 7,000 annually or 20,000 in a bad year.

They are libertarians not socialists.

No socialist would look on and not raise the alarm for millions of the elderly and the vulnerable and be fully on board with restrictions / lockdowns.

As much as people on the internet don't want to hear it , there has to be a trade off that some people will die. Talking about industries on their arse as you have done, you can't fix that without just standing firm that some people will die as a result.

Realistically there isn't a middle ground , we can lockdown the country again but people will still lose their life despite that. But allowing businesses to collapse can have a much greater effect in the long term if you plunge thousands upon thousands of people out of work/business .

Given the age groups still effected by this, it would be much better to plan around protecting those who at most at risk rather than blanket lockdown everything . The last information was 50+ are those who are dying still, with that going up per age. Doesn't mean young people won't catch it or get sick, they have a significantly lower chance of dying.

So perhaps a better way of planning this pandemic would be to protect those at risk and let the younger people run things in the meantime. It won't mean positive tests will decrease as such but you don't grind the country to a halt again and potentially destroy lives for the long term either.

Isn't this pretty much what they did in Sweden.

Obviously at the time there was a lot of talk about that and their rates shot up but they never shut down their economy.

That being said, they have a smaller population and better healthcare.
