Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

If you'd been following the debate here yould know that my view is that the furlough scheme will last beyond October in some form of business/government scheme.

My focus is on closing down know incubators for the Covid19 virus. So should your too.

Would you reopen the schools, and I assume, universities? (I say assume cos I have no idea if they ever closed, but assume they did)

Can’t you just answer the question mate?

I don’t value the economy over health. I value the jobs of young people though, whereas you don’t seem to?

There’s a middle ground with all this. Again, for the third time, what about people’s jobs?
You can blame the government for all sorts and that's fine.

But if we all got sick again then it's our own fault. You don't have to go the pub, or go to a restaurant if you don't want to. You don't have to pack the beaches even if it's socially distanced. You don't have to stand closer to someone else because the ruling dropped by a metre.

You can still stay indoors if you want, go out when necessary , open air stuff , no mass gatherings etc

It's common sense that seems to be getting forgotten about.

the Government are the ones telling us to do all that though, giving incentives to do it and in the case of workplaces trying to bully people into going back

They did. And numbers are going to be down come new intake. Its gonna further devastate this city and plenty of others.

This opening vs lockdown debate is both misleading and pointless - we *should* be able to do what other countries do, and have things open but with measures in place making it likely we’ll catch any new outbreak.

Currently we don’t have that, and the fault for that lies squarely with this government.

Ah yes, pubs, well known for not shutting in record numbers because they don’t have two pennies to rub together.
There's been a renaissance in pub and bar attendance in recent years. It's a growth industry.

Many of the main chains like Wetherspoons can and should be made to dig into their profits to meet government halfway in furloughing their workers.

I'm not advocating it.

I'm saying that the discussion is that if the academic sector opens then something has to give in order to balance out the probably growth of the R-number.

Its your field isnt it? Or at least, was. Its never occurred to me till now, but a functioning university seems a nightmare to get to atm.

Cummings wants to shut down most arts degrees anyway and just have a load of geeks pouring over data. I've taught at universities around the world myself and from what I gather from contacts everyone is deferring.
