I;m talking about from September. There will be a mix of online and - where appropriate - face-to-face teaching. That is the plan as fas as I'm aware.
You are correct. And I've never seen so many student gaffes in town begging for punters to rent their rooms.

I think just being around the place is part and parcel of the experiance. The libraries are the hubs of learning, for instance.
The dvd collection at liverpool uni library Sydney jones is excellent. You can join as a visitor for a fiver if/when it opens.

Honestly I think the "experience" is why in the US some politicians and people want them opened with a gung ho attitude.

Its not even about the education for many.

Two of my closet friends work in one of the big universities and have been planning this coming new year primarily online. They say they plan to open with a very much revised schedule also for actual attending.

Some of my wife's family and my neighbors seem to be more disappointed that their kids who are due to start or go back to college will miss the fun social element.

That and they are not rid of them yet haha!

I am due to start teaching some IT related stuff too in a college and as of yet they have no plan for how I will be doing it. But for me most of what I will be teaching can be done online.
Do tell us more!

I live right by the uni and it's been so sad to see no life there. As they were open 24 hrs I used to go in and fend off my insomnia reading all manner of stuff. Very sad indeed.

A lot of HE was going that way (remote learning) even before Covid19. This has just accelerated it. It'll be the same in other areas of life (GP 'attendance' etc).

This will be a massive shift in life.
I understand a lot of institutions are asking lecturers to record their content so that it's 'banked' by the University for continuous study.

As a former academic, what are your thoughts?

Im not a former academic, I just dont teach anymore!

It sounds like a good idea, though I doubt they'd want my tuppence-worth preserved for posterity.

Kinda waters down the university "experience" a bit. But needs must I guess.

But to me, it seems the university issue has not been part of the dialogue at all. Education has all been about schools and child care, but maybe thats cos as @Tea_drinker has alluded to, been getting some stuff done quietly.

From a commercial perspective, a big issue for universities is whether they will be able to have as many overseas students as they normally have. It's an area that has already been hit by Brexit, and if movement is further restricted by Covid then that's a big hole in budgets, especially if the government don't plug the gap caused by leaving the Horizon program on the research side of things.

If I were an academic (teaching or otherwise) having my work owned by the University rather than my expertise given via lecture or published on my own terms might make me a little uneasy.

I can foresee a number of issues short term and long term with that approach. However, I'm not of that world, just curious as to how those in the profession would feel about it.

They are using Microsoft teams mostly which records everything, even chats with colleagues.

Getting businesses up and running again is key but we still have to be careful. The pub I visited last night had all of the tables that were designated for eating completely full, with families taking advantage of the half price offer. The same pub will be near empty on Thursday. I took my granddaughter to an outdoor play area yesterday, packed with young mums, dads and their children. My granddaughter and myself were the only people wearing a face mask. It looks to me that we will end up with herd immunity whether we aspired to it or not.....
If the number of new cases being registered each day is correct then I should be safe to go out when I’m about 180. Put a pint behind the bar for me

What would you feel uneasy about, specifically?

From a copyright / commercial p.o.v there cant be many lecturers in a position to capitalise on their work (outside of the natural sciences).

But would a University be able to hold those as a teaching resource? I suspect not
Yes to the extent that they save lessons etc that remain available to students afterwards.

I think they are saved for a month unless of course you download them and save them yourself or something. I'm not a tech guy.
