Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Tough s**t......laughable that people who had to travel abroad are so "shocked and surprised" that they're gonna have to self isolate for 2 weeks now... Covid has been here since March, and the advice has been to holiday in your own country this summer.....its not rocket science, if everyone starts travelling from country to country again, the Virus will spread fast again... And if you're going to a popular tourist location this summer, you're an absolute idiot....

What's the difference to getting on a train to Cornwall or the Lakes? Or indeed going to stand in a pub with lots of others?

It's not much difference, I wouldn't do that either. But Spain has got higher infections and a transient population due to the holidaymakers coming from all over, I don’t know this for a fact but I would assume it would be harder to socially distance yourself seeing you will be eating out, bars and other holidaying stuff unless you stick to your room throughout the holiday.

It's that trade off again isn't it? Staying locked down for another 5 months would be better in terms of keeping infections down, but it would be a disaster for the economy, and all that flows from that. So we have to find a compromise, and be realistic enough to accept that this compromise will involve higher infection levels than might otherwise have been the case. We can't sit here wanting to have our cake and eat it.

I don't disagree, it is a trade off but to me it's one thing going on holiday in this country where money is being spent here to say going away to Spain. We spent months in lockdown to get the figures (largely) down giving the best chance when we move around now here we are less likely to pick something up, by introducing foreign travel it is just an unnecessary risk.

...its probably the sensible course of action, but I’m still surprised the Transport Secretary chose to take his family on holiday to Spain yesterday, hours before the embargo on ‘essential travel only’ was announced.

My daughter was due to travel to Spain this Friday, but saw this coming so booked Zante as an alternative yesterday. She isn’t privy to the detail that Secretary of States are, yet Shapps decided to go. Nobody is making anything of it so I‘m clearly thinking this is worst than it is.

To be honest, if Shapps knew this was coming, he'd have got absolutely slated if he'd changed his plans last minute based on that inside knowledge, so, while there are lots of reasons to slate the government in general, and Shapps in particular, I don't think this is one of them.

He also knew he could work from home easily enough on return, which is an option many, including your daughter ( if I remember rightly, she's a doctor ? ) don't have, which makes it easier for him.

Weren't people told to self isolate coming in from certain countries in Jan and Feb. They just weren't checked on to make sure they complied.

Principally China and Lombardy / North Italy if I remember rightly, with North Italy being the end of Feb and, specifically, Wuhan at the end of Jan ? The lack of checks that people were isolating, then and now, is an issue, but isn't a reason not to tell people to isolate.

Not much really, unless you're sat very close to someone infected on a plane, the filtration systems will protect you. I'd be more concerned about getting infected at the airports either end than on the plane itself on a 2 to 4 hour hop to Europe.

Exciting and promising news, but still very early in the process ...only just moved to small animals so hopefully continues to look good

Is this true? I don't know about air, but removing something the size of a virus from water is purification.

It's a huge culture shift that is needed and probably won't take place. Would applaud any government that genuinely trued though

It makes a lot of sense financially to do something about it. Obesity costs the nation a small fortune in health services, never mind lost productivity.

Manufacturers and the food lobby will resist it, but ultimately, people will spend money on food and drink, so, if a government changes the playing field, then manufacturers, while grumbling and lobbying, will adapt and still turn much the same sort of profit.

GPs round us already write prescriptions for limited time at gyms / leisure centres, so, in some ways, it's an extension of that.

Will it work ? Probably not.
Is it worth a try ? Definitely
Will it get the resources it needs ? Probably not.

One thing's for sure though, COVID's focused the minds of quite a few people I know who were overweight and/or had underlying health issues, so now is a good time to make a push.

Because it's a new risk, being told they're twice at risk of dying from COVID seems to have affected them in a way that knowing they were twice as likely to die early from a cardiovascular cause or were at a higher risk of getting cancer just passed them by.

Yea, it's true, I'm talking about air scrubbers rather than water filters though mate. If they're properly maintained and set to refresh cabin air at fairly frequent intervals, they're not far off the standard you'd get in an operating theatre.

I think I read somewhere that despite filtering there’s still a risk from those sat within 1 row of you either side.
