Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

It's easy to criticise the decision to impose 2 weeks isolation on people returning from Spain with next to no notice. But we made a big mistake on not being stricter on people coming into the country in March, so maybe the decision makers, and the scientists feeding those decision makers data and making recommendations, have learnt from previous mistakes ?

The current situation in Spain might improve over the next week or so, in which case the decision might look knee jerk, but, if it gets worse over there, then it'll be vindicated. Personally I'm glad they've acted early.

Same here. If we have learnt anything its that you cant muck around with this thing.

Won't be ideal, nothing is right now, but do you have other family in England where you could live with for 3 weeks, or stay in a hotel (and continue to work remotely from that location), after 2 weeks isolating there, you have no concerns and can visit your Dad the 3rd week?.... When you return to Spain you're working remotely from home anyways...
We currently have a guy in my office whose visiting family in Poland, so he's gone for 3 weeks, using 1 week holidays and working remotely the other 2 weeks, when he returns he'll work from home for another 2 weeks and then return to the office.... The technology is there now, so make the most of it.... As long as your boss is reasonable, and in this case he/she really should be, then it's very doable...
If it was just me then yeah but my wife and son are due to fly back a week earlier to see her family. We don't get over that often due to her work so coming over and not seeing anyone and being stuck at my mum's for 2/3 weeks without her being able to see her family won't work. We'll just sit it out and be patient. Just disappointing because we were all looking forward to it and my son was excited about seeing his cousins. Also our region hasn't had an increase in cases either which makes it all the more frustrating. At least the transport secretary will have a good time on holiday though

Some big talk this morning about anti obesity, would be nice if its sincere but hard to believe from a party that's first act was to cancel free swimming for kids. Here in Palma local authorities have seen the value of more people running and cycling and have sacrificed a section of the road on main strips to extend cycle paths. Not sure if the UK are doing anything practical to encourage more physical activity and healthy eating or it's just posturing
They'd need to remove about 75% of products from supermarket shelves if they were serious. More likely to offer people 5% voucher off a new bike

...its probably the sensible course of action, but I’m still surprised the Transport Secretary chose to take his family on holiday to Spain yesterday, hours before the embargo on ‘essential travel only’ was announced.

My daughter was due to travel to Spain this Friday, but saw this coming so booked Zante as an alternative yesterday. She isn’t privy to the detail that Secretary of States are, yet Shapps decided to go. Nobody is making anything of it so I‘m clearly thinking this is worst than it is.

You've got to take into account that this guy lied about his own name to hide his business interests posing as Michael green. He also lied about his birthplace depending on which constituency he was running in. It really makes me so angry

Weren't people told to self isolate coming in from certain countries in Jan and Feb. They just weren't checked on to make sure they complied.

Not her fault if the Government said it was safe to travel in the first place quarantine free. The direction coming from them is just ridiculous and the papers didn't help by spouting stuff like 'freedom' and 'summer holidays are back on'.

I do wonder why people started booking flights though as this was always a possibility.

I don't agree to be honest. Everyone knew this was a possibilty this summer. I think anyone who booked a 'last minute' holiday was being utterly reckless.

In my eyes it's just stupidity. And people are used to cabinet members acting stupidly.

It will only become a major issue if some media mogul decides to make it flavour of the month and ram it down our throat 24/7. At this stage it will no doubt become a capital offence taking up 80% of PMQT

I agree to a point. I have to question the sanity of anyone who gets on airplane with 150 others and then possibly could get into a situation where they are stuck somewhere if it really goes pete tong in 2/3 weeks time (if it isn't essential travel).

However you cannot dictate where people go on holiday and if when they went it was quarantine free then there isn’t much you can do. Presumably if they cannot work from home they will not be paid for the two weeks they're quarantining for? I'd say that should be punishment enough for that decision to fly somewhere.

What's the difference to getting on a train to Cornwall or the Lakes? Or indeed going to stand in a pub with lots of others?
