Said in my original post that I don’t believe gyms should reopen yet and that I have helped clients set up routines at home to keep them going. These routines are very much designed to preserve their levels as much as possible in preparation for the gyms reopening- I would never advise these workouts for long term optimal performance. You run into issues with plateaus quite quickly which means you need to either continually keep buying equipment or become an elite level calisthenics athlete utilising very advanced body weight movements in order to keep progressing.
I don’t dispute you can do a “decent” workout at home but it’s not optimal-But boo hoo we’re in the middle of a pandemic so I shut up and do my push ups with a backpack on and make do. I just think people don’t realise that every individual has different goals and standards. So whilst you (not you specifically, the general “you”), may be happy to go for a walk every day and try and eat a little healthier, for others they want to train hard 4/5 times a week and lift some heavy weights. Walking, maybe even running, does absolutely nothing for them.
My main issue however with the “gym isn’t vital” perspective is it does disregard the entire mental health aspect of going the gym. Yes, we all have a body which you can use anywhere to get a decent level of fitness. But for some people it is just different going to the gym. If you don’t get that you don’t get it. That’s not a bad thing. I just think people need to be aware that the gym literally is therapy for some people.
