Not sure where you live ( the States presumably ? ), but new COVID hospitalisation figures are in the graphs in the daily UK briefings and are running at something like 700 a day in England.

In Lebanon (Middle East), been watching with horror what's happening in Europe and the States for the past 2 months (we closed our borders early on and went to Lock-down and avoided your scenario so far but the virus is here and we simply have no idea what to do next)

Good to see, though I still think for the app to work as part of a testing / tracing system it has to breach privacy quite a bit - the government needs to explain to people why it has work like that, and make the rest of it effective (eg: when it says you might have been exposed, it gets you to speak to someone straight away and if needed you get a test within a very short space of time).

who would ever have thought ignoring advice would lead to this
If they'd even gone for a phased return which spread out over time, I think teachers and schools would have been more supportive of the decision to open more.

Setting an arbitrary date, claiming it was safe but taking a week and a bit (or is it now two?) to come up with the scientific evidence and offering no real flexibility...

... well it's not a way to win the population over. All reports suggest that there wasn't going to be a big uptake either, so it's only been counter-productive.

The problem is it almost looks like the government have just picked a date from a hat and said "That'll do" instead of having proper consultation with all parties concerned before putting a date out there.

TBF that is the good possibility; the bad possibility is that they had proper consultation with all parties concerned and then binned it all off and just picked a date from a hat.
