Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

That’s awful but not surprising.

Probably means all our bickering about whether schools should reopen or not is by the by... or should be if the government stick

3/4 out of the Union has rejected the holding hands and walk into the virus approach that the Tories are espousing.

If the ‘Kingdom’ was really United it would be falling in line with it’s Celtic leadership.

In all honesty the school thing is craziness, this "Inflammatory Reaction" in kids, linked to this virus, while rare, is yet an unknown entity!

As is probably most of the long term effects of this virus in Adults.

Is it me, or has the butcher's address last Sunday been utterly taken apart now, and less than a week later it's in tatters?

Back to work met with hostility (rounded off today by the teachers refusing to comply)
Workplace distancing procedures rubbished by unions
R-number heading upward
Ridiculous conflicting info on distancing (house buyers can visit your home, but not family)

This looks a defeated government on Covid19 to me. It cant go on like this without a series of sackings and forced resignations.

I was thinking the same actually. It’s almost as if his shambolic address never happened.

It definitely rattled his equally monstrous cabinet with the wheeling out of Raab the following day to try and translate the previous evening’s waffle to various media outlets. You could see the desperation in his eyes as he tried to piece together the fragments his master had left for him to pick up.

This was followed by his disastrous performance at PMQs in the proceeding week. His myth is slowly imploding. The Emperor’s clothes unravelling.

The Government forgets the majority of us still have to be around folk be it out shopping and in public etc.

I get the feeling unless you are a key worker or a politician/rich you wont ever be given the chance of a test.

Wish you could just buy one privately at a reasonable price independently rather than waiting to be given one by Boris.

But the majority of us don't have to be in direct touching contact with ill people or the vulnerable while taking care of them. Limited resources should be used wisely, the rest of us should take all reasonable steps to minimise risk. We can stand 2m away, we can opt to take a different route if things look a little crowded, we can do a lot of things from home.

There are very few circumstances where we have to be out and around other people and it's possible for us to do so without coming into direct close contact with them. We can also minimise the amount of time we do this for.

Key or frontline workers aren't afforded those options. And they still have to go shopping and do all the stuff we "need" to on top of a full day working in much more hazardous conditions.

What's frightening about that for me is that my youngest had exactly that at 6 months and we rushed him to hospital fearing the same thing - sepsis.

He never go a diagnosis, they just treated with antibiotics. Luckily he recovered. When I first saw Kawasaki Disease in relation to this it chilled me.

The smoking thing really is fascinating. Is it a coincidence that smoking effects the lungs? They're saying nicotine is the key but it really does seem too coincidental.
Agreed. I wouldve thought smokers would have it worse. Although I believe that study is just likelihood of testing positive/getting the disease, not outlook once you get it. Still pretty interesting

It's been like that since they dared to suggest they close in the first instance. A complete lack of respect towards the profession - particularly primary schools where the public have treated them like babysitters.

Teachers I know have been working their arses off doing lesson plans, video content, uploading to Tapestry every day, terrified of schools opening prematurely and the virus spreading, them and the kids taking the virus home and killing their parents/grandparents.

But of course, the government needs their babysitters to get the economy moving again.

Disgusting.
Bang on the money. Even before this virus people have continously disrespected teachers and this pandemic has just highlighted it even more. I dont know what class sizes are in the UK but i dont see how are teachers and schools are supposed to maintain social distancing in a classroom of 20+ students. Teachers work their asses off (many still have to take training, lesson planning, etc in the summer) while being underpaid yet detractors act like they have some cushy, carefree job

Apparently around 10‰ more likely to die if a smoker and you get to ICU but between two to five times less likely to be admitted to ICU in the first place.

At this point it's actually beyond reasonable doubt that smoking - or at the very least nicotine - is bizarrely a protective measure.

I'd like to know the crossover with vaping. If it's nicotine, then surely similar stats for people who vape would be seen.

Nicotine has health benefits some studies have shown. It's how you get it thats the problem, the toxins and how the crops are sprayed etc etc. There's a thing called smokers paradox where when a smoker gets bypass surgery and continue smoking studies found that the smokers grew new arteries faster than the quitters. Makes me wanna start again lol
