Looks like school decision may be up to headmasters, and parents won't be fined if they don't send their kids before summer hols.

Makes sense tbh

Any head teacher can close their school if it is not safe to open it. This isn't new, nor is it being at their discretion to fine for non attendance.

If you look carefully it actually says that the aim is to have all primary children back for the last month of the school year, so from 24th June.

I'll be amazed if that happens.

Nobel scientist predicts virus will 'burn out' in next two weeks

A Nobel Prize- winning scientist has predicted, through analysing raw data, that Ireland's death rate and infection will "burn itself out" in the next two weeks, enabling an earlier exit from lockdown.

Professor Michael Levitt, of Stanford University, was speaking after he correctly calculated the demise of China's spread, long ahead of most health experts.

In early February, as many scientists warned of exponential growth, Levitt forecast the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in China would taper out at around 80,000, with 3,250 deaths. Three months on, China has a total of 82,885 cases and 4,633 deaths - in a population of 1.4bn.

Now Prof Levitt has calculated that Ireland's infection is burning itself out and will 'taper off' at around 30,000 cases and fewer than 2,400 deaths. Ireland now has 22,385 cases and 1,403 deaths.

He says the death rate is more difficult to predict, due to a number of factors, such as some countries counting coronavirus deaths in those who would normally have died from underlying health conditions.

I mentioned a week or so ago about one scientist suggesting that the virus basically had a ‘shelf life’ after which it declines. I hope there may be something in it tbh.....

I think those tests are useful to get NHS workers/vital workers back to work, but largely pointless for a general population.

Populist measures and a blag to claim testing is happening.

Only worthwhile tests for the general population IMO, is the blood tests.
Strongly disagree.

Spent most of my weekend on the phone to my elderly uncle who has all the symptoms of coronavirus and because of age/co-morbities is understandably concerned. A quick test that came back negative would have greatly reduced a huge amount of unnecessary, and frankly dangerous, stress for him.

I'll be amazed if any of it happens if new infections continue at current levels

28th Feb that.

A burden for you to bear...

Whenever you're arguing the toss, you can always find an early post with you having the contradictory view.

Maybe sometimes pause, and assess.

Not always, by any means. Is there a poster here who doesn't contradict themselves?

The acid test is whether you get the call right in the end. I have. Certainly on this.

They do have to start opening up stuff in stages and trying to get some people back to work who couldn't but for me personally there are two things I think they have got badly wrong with the current situation.

Firstly, opening up the parks and beaches etc. Mixed messages about who you can meet at the park this morning so you will now get groups meeting together. Just look at the bank holiday weekend and loads of people meeting up and not socially distancing. There will be tons of people gathering at parks now etc, meeting up with people and even if they are trying to socially distance there will be that many people it will be so difficult to actually do it. Then you will have the idiots that don't even try to socially distance. Also I don't see how going into a packed park to meet a loved one is ok but sitting apart in their garden just you and them is not. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Two, is the plan they have for schools. They do need to do it in stages but starting with Reception and Y1 is just stupid. I also wouldn't be starting with 3 year groups as that's nearly half the school and for just infant schools that's like two thirds of the school back at once. You can't socially distance 4/5 year olds plus you have the issue with space in the school if you have to socially distance them all with 3 year groups back. They should have started with Y5 and 6 or done it on a daily rota with a different year group in each day then looking to hopefully have all the school back by September if safe to do so. At least then if you just had Reception or Y1 in you would have a lot more space in the school to try and keep them apart and safe.
