Yes this is the link, read it all
He makes a very convincing argument that the sooner you go into lockdown the more lives you save, and on the face of it, it's hard to disagree. The problem the various authorities have is that this is just as much an economic emergency as much as it is a medical one. Trying to manage them both involves balancing one against the other. I'm glad I'm not the one having to make the decisions.

There's been a lot of unfair criticism of the government on here. Fortunately that isn't the case in Westminster where, apart from justified criticism for compensation for the self employed and non contract workers, they mostly seem on board with government policy in their handling of the situation. I think that's because the government, for once, are acting on the advice of the experts.

I don't think it's a case of whether the UK go into full lockdown like we're seeing in Italy etc. It really is a case of WHEN we do it and that will be when the experts say the time is right. In making that decision I'm sure they will have all the stats and information contained in that report from medium.com, and working on those scenarios will have an educated guess at the true numbers of those infected here and when they will start to manifest themselves.

Personally I'll be surprised if we go much longer than another week before we start closing schools and colleges and ban sporting events and other large gatherings. As a layman I can't understand why we're still allowing large gatherings to take place, but all we can do is trust in the experts to do their job. As I said, it's not a role I envy in the slightest.

From what I heard today there are a couple of things. The first is that they actually want everyone to be exposed to it to build up the herd immunity. Secondly they want the NHS not to be overrun so they want the inevitable cases to be spread out as far as possible. Now I’m assuming that they’ve done the modelling and worked this out. To me it feels like the Irish government is making a political decision and the U.K. is making a pragmatic medical decision.....but really, who knows....

Oh mate, you really do sound like a tool

My portfolio was chugging along at 16% yield just two weeks ago. Today it’s -1.7%. Huge swing!

It’s a long term investment though, it’ll recover.
I'm the same, lost 30% in 2 weeks, but also a long term investment. The bigger issue will be superannuation (Australian pension), pretty much everyones personal retirement fund will be down 20-30%

So it seems the only way you can be considered a potential coronavirus risk in the UK is if you have either been abroad recently to specific locations or come into contact with a confirmed coronavirus patient. This is what i was told when i spoke to the emergency services an hour ago after my 92 year old grandmother briefly collapsed after feeling nauseous along with all the textbook commond cold symptoms. Chances are she probably does just have a shitty cold which is amplified because of her age but putting that aside the criteria one has to meet in order to be considered a potential risk seems ridiculous.

I even mentioned this to the guy on the phone and prodded him about the governments response. He said he couldn't talk politics (obviously) but then gave me some seemingly rehearsed statement about how they think it's an appropriate guideline for finding those infected, he then went on to say they are doing a great job in responding to the crisis and how as an NHS worker for 12 years he believes they are now in a better position to deal with it than at any point before. Im not about to disagree with someone who actually works in the industry and probably knows infinitely more than me but... let's just say i wasn't convinced.

Maryland uncovered its first community case today and promptly acted to shut down most gatherings and close schools. A Republican governor as well calling the shots. Hogan isn't one who is aligned with Trump really at all, but still refreshing to occasionally see someone from that party act respectably.

Hoping your gran recovers soon x

I kept a decent portion in cash and have been moving it over to buy stocks (FTSE tracker) in chunks. Also selling some of my bonds to buy stocks, and basically plowing everything I can into it.

The current selloff has put the FTSE at valuation levels that have not been seen in my investing lifetime. It has been the forgotten index of the last 20 years, but from this base it's going to surprise a lot of people over the next decade.
