But the rates of infection have plateaued over the last few weeks and the rate of daily deaths is going down (albeit slowly).

Were you slagging off Italy and Spain for attempting to starting to lift their lockdowns a few weeks back?
Dont talk bollocks.

The infection rates and death rates are up and down; by the assessment of even the biggest Pollyanna this situation is still rife with danger...and now that numb nuts has sent a message for people to go out and send the infection rate right up again.

As for Italy and Spain - they did and do have their curve flattened in a way the UK doesn't.

How on earth can you defend this carnage?

Imagine Churchills famous speech written today - "We will fight them on the Aldi carparks, er… I mean playgrounds, er … I mean pedestrianised town centres, no I mean probably (weather permitting) on the Beaches"
Doesn't matter what his personal behaviour was. He was right to state there had to be a full lockdown.

Wait for the common sense line about being alert about a virus... We know the clarity is even coming here.lol

If they are both up and down (i.e. fluctuating) the overall result will be of a 'flattening' - over a period of weeks - surely? There's no sharp rise and unfortunately no sharp fall.

They didn't at the time they started easing lockdown measures. Their numbers were up and down just in the same way that ours are.

Dave, only time majority of people have left their homes in the last seven weeks is to exercise or buy food.
That's not true. There's never been a full scale lockdown encouraged. There have been hundreds of thousands not observing lockdown. The lockdown should have been enforced as elsewhere. Coppers and troops on the streets if need be as in France, Spain and Italy.

True that - my missus can work from home but she only earns around 20k or so a year - meanwhile the lower class Brickies and Landscapers picking up 35-40k+ a year lol

It's the classic left-wing crap that we've seen over the last few years.

One of my best mates is the typical example. Went to a private school and never actually had any stress in his life (financially) because his parents are loaded - yet acts as some valiant protector of the 'working class'. He couldn't tell you working class if it slapped him in the face because to him working class just means council estate.

I'd encourage you to go for a walk (if it's safe to do so where you are - which it surely can't be that hard to avoid people if you go at the right time) if you've been cooped up inside for seven weeks or more. It's not good for anyone.

As with everything these days, it seems you can only have an extreme opinion on the internet.

People either think the lockdown was ridiculous and an assault of human freedom. Or people think we should be on lockdown for the rest of the year or until there's a vaccine.

My opinion is we needed the rules and they maybe came too late. But it's now been 7 weeks and I think we need to start planning to gradually lift the rules. An economic catastrophe is looking almost inevitable and people will suffer that way too. Theres no easy answers, but we cant stay like this forever.
The thing is, any lifting of lockdown restrictions has to come with agreement of a number of parties, with a clear roadmap of activity and very clear concise messaging.

Anyway, can't be arsed getting into more arguments with posters I like (genuinely).

The advice from the government is typically vague and the stuff this morning is even worse.

But the general point of needing a basic plan to lift lockdown was also required - and we at least have that.

It's all about small steps. The majority of companies will not be forcing their office workers back in this week - let's put it that way. Even construction/call-out workers cannot work if their job involves going into other homes - barring an emergency.

Really? I am just trying to conjure up what you might have been saying at this stage had the police and army really been patrolling the streets...
