That was my point really. I’m agreeing with you.
Churchill was an incredibly clever, political operative whose oratorical skills were needed at an incredibly difficult time.
Doesn’t mean he wasn’t a ****, though.
Man of his time... Got particularly lucky up to that point a high born used to failure and blood lusting racsist are fair accusations.

This is the thing. That generation, the generation involved, never talked about it.

I found out fairly recently that my grandad (who is long gone now) was in the battle of the bulge. He drove a tank. At 19. But he never ever ever discussed it. Ever.

It’s the baby boomer generation that seem obsessed with the war.

For many of those that fought in the war they bottled up a lot of what happened. But saying that, they gave their verdict in 1945 over what they thought of Churchill.

And look at the legacy they demanded for their endeavours, a much fairer society for their families by the way of a welfare state that distributes wealth. A legacy which is being dismantled as we type, which has left us more exposed to this virus than many other countries.

Ok then. I assume for you to say that you have read about this, and have been aware of the situation over there since January at least.

So, tell me where I’m wrong?

You`re wasting your time mate.

He has an agenda and conveniently turns a blind eye to things like the fact that over a million Uighur Muslims are in CCP " re education " camps for no other crime than being Muslim.

I used to think it was wummery on a grand scale, but I`m not so sure any more, as his levels of hypocrisy are off the scale.

No, we have no trust in the government and very average NHS, we saw what was happening in Iran and Italy and 1 week before the government declared the lock-down streets were empty and no one was going out, the government announcing the lock-down as a formality, i was amazed back then even reading the thread here days later that UK was still normal life and many in here were complaining avout the pubs being closed!

If there was no trust in the central government. What was the organisation locally like to contain and deal with the virus?

What they thought of the Tories, certainly.

It should not be forgotten that whilst Winston was one of the anti-appeasement crowd he did unceremoniously dump them all on being given a Cabinet role again in 1939 and never really brought that many of the rest of them into senior positions in his Government after being PM (Macmillan and Amery being the exceptions).

Take your tedious Cold War nonsense elsewhere and focus on the GBCP not the CCP.

Out of interest, what is the death toll in Liverpool?
Petty bad. If you are interested in the death/infection rates across the country, the official numbers by region/area are here:

The Upper Tier Local Authority (UTLA) numbers are the easiest to follow, I think. They show huge variations across the country.

Yes and will want the loan back 10 times over ask Greece........

Ok so firstly you think it’s shocking if people want a loan paid back ? Secondly you’re suggesting the EU bailout to Greece repayment is schedule is 10 times the original loan ? I’m not certain , in fact I am I reckon that’s absolute BS . I’m going to speculate the interest at the top end is about 5-6% .

However, coupled with this he was a man possessed of principle and physical courage.

He accepted responsibility for failings at Gallipoli that he couldnt have even known about, let alone influenced. Not only did he resign he sent himself to the western front. Not to sit in a chateau as a staff officer but as a frontline major who, by all accounts led from the front. It's this, and his intellect, that rather set him apart from Boris' washed out tribute act...
