Churchill was a eugenicist too.
All warleaders have their faults - Churchill made many mistakes , but against a madman trying to dominate the world - he was never a eugenicist - he believed in our Empire rightly or wrongly, he was the right man at the right time - voted out of office after the war.......He never tried to gas one race off the planet ....
This pandemic is harder to fight as it is an invisible killer coming from a country with also a terrible human rights record.....

You'd wonder how they are so good at surpassing the virus in Asia (and we dont trust their numbers):

We are a primitive society compared to this people.

The west in general will suffer a catastrophic loss of status after all this. The UK in particular has been stone age in its response.

I’m not sure times do actually change given the current zeitgeist.

Well, I dont see major political figures and intellectuals across the spectrum calling for forced sterilisations, so we must have made some progress at least.

This is the thing with Churchill. He absolutely wasnt a saint. But the awful aspects of his character shouldn't cloud the admirable ones and vice versa. Nuance is a lost art.

Seeing the full picture of the man, rather than selective edit into hagiohraphy or hatchet job, is the reason Roy Jenkins biography stands head and shoulders above any other.

“The unnatural and increasingly rapid growth of the Feeble-Minded and Insane classes, coupled as it is with a steady restriction among all the thrifty, energetic and superior stocks, constitutes a national and race danger which it is impossible to exaggerate”.

"A “strange pneumonia” was circulating in northern Italyas long ago as November, weeks before doctors were made aware of the
novel coronavirus outbreakin China, one of the European country’s leading medical experts said this week.

“They [general practitioners] remember having seen very strange pneumonia, very severe, particularly in old people in December and even November,”
Giuseppe Remuzzi, the director of the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, said in an interview with the National Public Radio of the United States.
“This means that the virus was circulating, at least in [the northern region of] Lombardy and before we were aware of this outbreak occurring in China.”

There could well be different strains that were circulating in Europe.
It's clear that Hubei was one affected region for the spread of the virus, but that regions in Europe were equally so.

That was my point really. I’m agreeing with you.
Churchill was an incredibly clever, political operative whose oratorical skills were needed at an incredibly difficult time.
Doesn’t mean he wasn’t a ****, though.

Exactly. He should be praised for his wartime leadership but more should be made of his crimes too so he can be viewed in a more balanced light. The Nazis aren't cut any slack for eugenics being acceptable in the 30s so why should he?

No, we have no trust in the government and very average NHS, we saw what was happening in Iran and Italy and 1 week before the government declared the lock-down streets were empty and no one was going out, the government announcing the lock-down as a formality, i was amazed back then even reading the thread here days later that UK was still normal life and many in here were complaining avout the pubs being closed!
I myself work on the principle that trust is earned, not judt given out of subservience. Comparing response you described to our response, I know which response I prefer. And which builds trust...

Or tedious old blowhard George Bernard Shaw. Who's love for socialism was more a love of control of others to push what he thought was best such as eugenics. Hence his eager embrace of Stalin.

Could still turn a phrase, mind.

In my country (Lebanon, a 3rd World developing country with huge economical problems + 2 million refugees for small country, total population around 6 millions) we had our first confirmed case on February 21, February 29 we closed our schools/universities and banned gatherings, March 6 restaurants and pubs were closed, March 10 the first death with a total of 50 cases, March 15 we went into lock-down and closed our borders including the airport, on April 5 we started bringing in flights for Lebanese struck abroad, they all get tested at the airport and quarantined for 14 days, total cases 800 with 26 deaths, we had 20 deaths on April 10th, the past month we had 6 deaths, daily cases now are 2-3 locals and 20-30 from the travelers, our airport will remain closed (only bringing few flights per day for those who are stuck abroad with a strict policy of testing and quarantining), lock-down was removed 2 weeks ago, life is 70% back to normal.

Didn't halt flights, test at the UK airports, channel tunnel and ports and didn't quarantine because the UK 'scientific' was against these measures. Which is incredible and considering the UK is an island we had the chance to get on top of this in January but chose not to due to the health and scientific 'experts'. Negligence of the highest order. While this quarantine measure is very welcomed, it's too little and too late to stop the spread of the virus in the UK. Testing at airports and ports and quarantining those with symptoms would have drastically slowed down the virus from spreading in the UK. But unfortunately, 'experts' prestige, and economic considerations by the government were brought into the equation. Negligence for the welfare and safety of the UK people from the government.

He was a good speaker just like... Hitler?

Not really my Grandfather fought in the First World War hardly spoke about it joined under age as he was skint, came back settled in a job as a postman - died aged 63 after the affects of mustard gas ended up in an OAP home ....as we lived five in a 2 up 2 down ......
I always respect the people who fought for our country voluntarily, but I agree with you that if it happened again not many volunteers would step foreward, but no disgrace in having a 75th anniversary to remember how we gained freedom !
This Virus imo is worse than any war .......

My grandad was in the war and he never spoke about it. This the generation after that that wear it as some weird badge of honour.

Once this virus is controlled, are we going to clap every year for the NHS?
