That woman truly is a hero. The kind of leader the US needs right now. Although the cabal of psychopaths in power in Washington, seem determined to make every last US citizen, and of the world get this virus, hopefully this time of crisis will provoke some real leaders with empathy, and integrity to start speaking out on behalf of, and fighting for the people themselves.

This was awesome. But its easy for the CDC director to claim that we get free testing because we don't have enough tests

Where are those numbers from?

It's an amalgamation, but probably most come from the medium.com article on covid19 data. I will see if I can link you up to specific sources.

Here it is, American Hospital Association data/estimates. The hospitalization rate is 5%, so better, but still terrible.

If you don't think they're glad the poorly and old are going to die you need to have a word with yourselves.

It would be nice to be quarantined in Aspen, Co, right now. It's a truly lovely place.

Oh, "Aspen tests reveal largest virus cluster in [Colorado.]"

Who's got a house in Jackson, Wyoming?

Back to LL's comments, the real issue is this (some of these are estimates, but based on actual numbers):

UK 66 million
Infection rate ~ 30-40%
Hospitalization rate ~ 5%
Total hospitalized ~ 900,000 to 1.3 million hospitalized

Total hospital beds in UK ~ 168,000

So the issue isn't so much "preventing" people from getting the virus, but preventing people from overwhelming the hospital system. If it takes 10 days per person to receive treatment in the hospital, you're looking at a minimum of 60 days hospitalization* to properly treat patients. What you've seen in China is building new hospitals in response to the need for beds. In other nations you see significantly higher fatalities for patients who are older or have underlying medical concerns. Any guesses why the older and unhealthy patients are dying? (Hint: it's related to lack of hospital beds.)

*This ignores the fact that there are other illness that require hospitalization

Fixed some of that due to incorrect hospitalization estimate. The treatment estimate is mine, dunno if it takes 10 days. The results are the same even if small details shift it somewhat.

If it takes 10 days per person to receive treatment in the hospital, you're looking at a minimum of 120 days hospitalization* to properly treat patients. It's not simply a matter of the NHS having only 168000 beds. It's more a case of the NHS having only 4000 ICU beds of which 80% are currently occupied.

1 week ago we had 40 confirmed cases in the, UK. This week it's over 400. Next week we are looking at between 4-5000, the week after 50000.

Our NHS will be swamped, there will not be enough ICU beds, not enough ventilators.

People who shouldn't die from this illness will, due to a complete lack of action and foresight from this government.

yes, my numbers aren't accurate estimates, but intended to clearly illustrate how severely unprepared most nations are to handle this kid of problem. especially when their leaders deny there is anything to worry about.

also, if you believe in signaling theory, when Trump is tweeting out CDC's public health warnings, we're f*cked

I agree. Italy has a well funded health service, but still quickly became swamped. Running out of beds, ventilators and staff. The result being the higher proportion of deaths as compared
to China, who were able to build new hospitals and equip them with life saving equipment.

Given the state of our NHS the UK govt should have closed the borders, banned public gatherings, dragged in any and all ex NHS staff, grabbed every bit of available ventilator kit they can find. Called in support from the armed forces and should have started to train this new support army in how to treat sufferers.

Instead. We have done nothing. Wash your hands and self isolate if you feel rough... REALLY!!!!
