Exactly. One could be tempted to take the view that the lockdown is useless. I mean how are so many people becoming continuous infected throughout the lockdown?
Without the lock-down the numbers would be absolutely catastrophic. As @MarcelsGoat has said, there are still lots of people working, which is probably a significant contributor outside of care homes etc. The countries who have handled this best have broadly followed the same route as far as I can see. Lock-down early and hard, carry out loads of testing and then move into track and trace. We did not lock-down early and hard, have only just got above absolute minimum testing levels and have yet to do any significant tracking and tracing. It's been an abysmal, pathetic effort by our government and their advisors. Until we do test, track, trace effectively we won't have a clue where new cases are coming from and ending or relaxing the lock-down becomes a very risky exercise.

People seem to be forgetting that the lockdowns are killing people also. I would be curious to see stats of cause of death also since lockdown. Obv corona would be the main percentage but I'm sure a good amount are due to other factors caused by lockdown also. They're basically saying any excess compared to previous years is coronavirus, completely ignoring the toll lockdown is having on peoples lives also. Just because myself, you and others on here are lucky enough to be safe and comfortable in lockdown doesn't mean that others are, some aren't so lucky.
Agree, one of the reasons why I think ”excess deaths” is the most appropriate measure of COVIDs impact as it will also reveal the more complicated picture that there will likely be a rise in people who have heart attacks at home because they were scared to go into hospital or the reduction in auto accidents as people didn’t travel as much/less traffic to collide with.

This has been an epic failure by Government. They had warning, they saw what had happened in Italy and Spain and they did nothing. They let the Spanish fans come, they let Cheltenham go ahead, they let Crufts go ahead (120,000 visitors and 18,000 trade and competitors) all in early March. Had we been the first in Europe to experience the virus I might have forgiven them. But they saw what was happening in other countries and failed to act.
I find it difficult to understand how people could believe any different. I hope that those responsible get held to account after all this. A complete failure of leadership.

You've got Brexit on the brain tell me why after on all night meeting in the EU the chief medical officer resigned in frustration..... Also what did the EU do to help Italy in their crisis?
The point was whether you could trust the UK Government suggestion about Brexit preparedness and timeline, when measured against the current response to Covid-19?

What do you think...

The ending of the lockdown is a purely commercial decision here, as it is in the US - two societies way behind the recovery of advanced European nations and a country mile behind South Korea, Singapore and China.

The lockdown should be tighter, in fact.
Way behind advanced European nations? The whole of the EU is in dire straits economically, it is touch and go if the euro will survive.

They dont give a flying one. They've butchered between 30,000 and 50,000 people and they're prepared to see more die if it means the economy is restarted and debt capped.

...and I get stick from Thatcher's Kinder on here for the correct usage of the word Murderers.
I've had to ration my visits to social media and watching news because it makes me so angry and sad. Today ( because I don't work on Wednesdays and I was a bit bored) I have engaged with some right wing acolytes who seem to only care about the economy. I have been called a loony leftie for daring to suggest that people's lives are more important than money. Since when did caring about the human race turn you into a nutcase. I despair. I'm also really annoyed that furloughed workers have been cast as the new benefit scroungers. Apparently they are all enjoying a jolly at the Govt's expense. again tirades of abuse when I said my currently furloughed husband is 60 in November, has worked since he was 16 with 2 brief periods of unemployment and is more than entitled to the £317 a week he is currently getting paid.

I despair. We need a revolution. A peaceful Ghandi/Martin Luther King one after this. (I hate violence) Mass disobedience to make a better fairer society for all of us.

If they start loosening things, I would hope they follow the Irish model where the vast majority of non essential retail isn’t re-opening until June 29th, unfortunately I don’t see that the case and everywhere will be opened by the middle of June

The Swedes have ballsed this up. They know it too. Their health experts and politicians look desperate when defending it with some vague view that the end of the summer will see them bomb proof against Covid19.

The Swedes for me are gambling on the end game. They know that their deaths in the first wave are going to be significantly higher than their neighbours but they are hoping that come the second/third/fourth wave because of herd immunity they will see a lot less deaths overall.
Only time will tell if they have got it right, their Prime Minister will go down in history as the worst or the best they have ever had.

Millions of people are still working, millions of people are still shopping and millions are also totally ignoring every aspect of the lockdown.

Thats how its still spreading.

It's a big part however....

A new analysis found that the virus can remain viable in the air for up to 3 hours, on copper for up to 4 hours, on cardboard up to 24 hours and on plastic and stainless steel up to 72 hours.

This means that if you adhere to the rules but go out for a walk or a jog, touch a gate or turnstile or even just go onto the same path in your garden as the food delivery driver walks up you can potentially pass it on without going anywhere near anyone, weeks before you even know you have it.
Unfortunately, that's also how it is still spreading. That is genuinely outside of human control.
Also of course there are a lot of bells out there having parties, sitting on park benches, meeting up with friends and family, but if everyone in the world adhered to the lockdown rules, it would still spread. People need to eat, people need to carry the food to other people.
Lockdown however has had a huge positive impact on the war against this virus, hopefully it continues.
