Because all the things they provide are available in a supermarket. Why leave things open that aren't required and risk the spread of Covid19?

Not everyone can get to a supermarket.

In the first few weeks of this the only place you could buy some stuff was in the small shops.

Not every town has a supermarket. Not one village has one.

And you try topping up your leccy or gas or pay your poll tax at a supermarket.

And try using a post office in a supermarket. Most/many are now inside small shops.

So yeah, spivs.

Those spivs shouldn't have been trading.

Why ?

Every single one has been open from day one since this shiz happened and all provide a service that is permitted under the guidelines.

All of them bar Waterfields are small privately owned businesses, who are doing their best to survive, taking nothing from the government by staying open and are providing local people with the opportunity to buy what they need locally, without the need to go to a supermarket.

You’re going mad.

the only places I could get a lot of stuff when this first happened was a local shop . I couldn’t really get about because I was injured and if I had to walk I couldn’t carry anything . Fortunately a couple of smaller places were fully stocked , unlike the Bigger panic bought stores . I’ll certainly display some brand loyalty to them going forward .

Worst death rate in Europe.

When the Government ministers refer to their handling of the covid-19 crisis as a success does it mean they were aiming to be top of the European table all along?

They have failed, and failed very badly.
The fall out from this in years to come is going to be staggering.

It doesn’t make you a spiv if you keep your business open just because other shops are selling the same as you . I’d rather buy from a smaller local shop if I could personally.
Well, maybe spiv was the wrong word. I've got nothing against them, but in a crisis my opinion is that (chemists apart) anything other than large units that has the capacity to distnace people effectively, provide a home delivery of pick up service is just asking for trouble.

That list were all non-essential retail.

Limit the number of patrons in the pub
No sitting at the bar
Table service only
No standing allowed

Been musing the pub thing for a while. (My mate has recently sold his).

Thing is, with a restaurant you could have a booking system, perhaps 2 services an evening, social distancing pretty easily. First service given 90 minutes, second service then comes in.

With pubs, folk tend to linger in them. So queuing outside till someone leaves is a non starter. Like would you think phoning a pub to book a 90 minute stay in one would work? It might do, but thats what would need to happen.

Think thats a cultural step too far for most of us.
