He'll survive.
People living in France and Spain etc. had effectively 30% docked off our pensions when the pound crashed in 2009.
Bit of belt tightening but we survived.

Most of us survive in most circumstances but potentially losing 30% of your net worth is enough to make most people concerned . Things have happened to people on this forum that ‘you’d survive ‘ doesn’t mean you’d want them to happen to you . Personally it Feels a very dismissive reply

I've just had lunch with a mate that retired before Christmas knowing he had a decent share portfolio that would see him through a comfortable retirement.
As of this morning, that portfolio was worth 36% less than when he retired just 3 months ago. He knows it'll recover in time when all this blows over but he is rightfully very worried.
I cashed in all my investment portfolio 4 weeks ago

Is it even accurate tho?

I've heard experts say that hand washing has a minimal impact on negating spread because it is an air-bourne virus, making large congregations of people in confined spaces a sure way to propagate its spread.

So someone is talking out of their arse.

Experts diminishing hand washing....unlikely. I need a source.

First - as this is a novel virus, information will continue to change as we learn more.

Second - there is nothing harmful about washing your hands more even if it doesn't decrease the spread of this virus (it does though) since it stops the spread of lots of bacterial and viral diseases.

Third - There is a new study that was published yesterday suggesting the virus droplets can survive in the air longer than previous thought (although hasn't been official termed airborne). The same study also shows it may survive longer on surfaces (counter tops, door handles, cell phones, ie stuff you touch with your hands) than previously thought.

TL/DR - Wash your dang hands!

And now seems a particularly good time to avoid getting ill for any reason if you can help it - both for your own health and to reduce strain on healthcare services.

Same with stopping shaking hands - very low cost way to reduce spread. Also means can avoid those idiots who crush your bones just to make sure they are doing a firm handshake!

Quite surprised how many high profile people seem to have caught it. I guess it's because sports teams are purposely going out of their way to test their players now... makes me think it must be way more widespread amongst the general untested population.

Plenty of money in the country. Always seems to be billions lay around to bail out banks, airlines, etc. Use some of that.

Rhetoric rather than an actual answer. The country is already in nearly 2 trillion pounds of debt.

Read through this thread and you’ll see people who have sadly lost their jobs in the past few days. The more severe the restrictions on the public and the more widespread this will become.

These lost jobs would lead to severe struggles for some and have impacts which could be life changing. Just look at the suicides which have resulted from austerity.

It’s not just ‘money’.

Dutch government just announced that they are cancelling all events where more than 100 people gather till the end of March. So no sporting events, or concerts and closing musea and theatres etc...

The source was Michael Osterholm: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Osterholm

He didn’t discourage anyone from washing their hands but was sceptical of its efficacy in preventing the spread of a coronavirus, and holds the opinion that the virus is more likely to be contracted through breathing in infected air, rather than the touching of objects. So the reverse opinion of the assertion reportedly mentioned on Radio 4 earlier today.

I’m not going to pretend to be an epidemiologist, but I don’t think I’ll be alone in not accepting the assertion that it’s fine for large groups of people to congregate in confined spaces, and that the countries that are implementing measures to prevent such congregations are doing so as a ploy to make people wash their hands more.
