Yes there are similar types of viruses such as MERS and SARS, there was some development done which produces a basic 'stem' for want of a better less medical term, this hasn't been wasted and has been used in the efforts to develop a vaccine for Covid-19 - it gave developers a start so it wasn't from scratch at all.

The speed of getting something tested is quite remarkable, and far, far quicker than it would normally take - global cooperation has been at the heart of the progress but also past research in Asia has helped.
If the vaccine is successful will it be open sourced or just given to one manufacturer to make.
Surely it should be put out there for everybody to make

I think that’s great for keeping people from having bbq’s or street parties or whatever but from a mental health point of view I’d argue for many people some Nasty rainy weather isn’t going to help a number of them who are probably already struggling .

Not to mention that the sun helps with regards "killing" it.

You are still allowed to walk in the rain - To be honest i'd love a week of rainy walks with no other knobheads around

Of course you are mate but there are a myriad of factors and research which some halfwit like me would butcher that links sunlight , weather , exercise and the rest with levels of anxiety and depression. People generally ‘feel better’ or their mood is better when the sun is shinning and many people are more like to get of the couch or even out of bed if it is compared to when it’s raining .

It’s just an observation I’m sure the rain will be great for all the things that annoy everyone in these threads I was just putting another opinion forward is all.

Spot on, part of the package in managing mental health...
Also, vitamin D, as a nation we don't get enough, very important in this topic for immune system.

What like people not following government advice, generally acting like entitled dickheads and by proxy essentially killing people and putting the whole country in lockdown?

Does that not annoy you as well?

I didn’t say that did I ? If I did I must have written it poorly , ill correct it if I’ve time and you point it out .

I’d be staggered if dickheads stopped being dickheads because it was raining , they might not have a bbq but I’d assume they’ve got homes and that but maybe not seeing them would annoy people less . I’ve no clue .

TBF, that photo foreshortens the distance on that image and is taken from an angle to show greater density. Also, those face masks - if all wear them (which all are doing there) - reduce the transmission of infection to one 37th of the rate without wearing masks. Almost neutralises it in fact. Which is why we all need these masks ASAP.

Totally depends on the mask and the fit.
Some don’t reduce transmission at all.

Folks should still find the best fit/thickness they can and wear one...just don’t go about like you’re fully protected

Anecdotally, working in health care the advise has evolved for us in recent weeks in wearing masks. Firstly we were advised to wear masks (and full PPE) working with or within two meters of anyone on droplet precautions, suspected or confirmed Covid.

In the last week we have been told by the HSE (Irelands NHS) that we have to wear masks on any clinical ward or within two meters of any patient regardless of clinical diagnosis or any other health care professional.

So essentially we are wearing masks all day every day in any and all clinical work or even just speaking to a colleague.

This is what our clinic went to a couple weeks ago

I think the very act of placing some sort of cloth between your face/nose and others will help. I cycle, and when I do, I have a couple of neck warmers pulled up over my face with sunglasses clamping down on them at the bridge of the nose. It's uncomfortable, but....

I’ve seen a study that looked at particle size reduction in non medical masks including home made models. Some did as well as medical grade surgical masks on filtration.

No point if it has gaps around the face through

Or if you aren't instructed how to safely take them on and off, or fail to maintain decent hand hygiene and social distancing. It's also worth us in the public remembering that healthcare staff wear goggles, gloves and all sorts as well as masks. It might be better than nothing, but isn't the solution on its own.
