Aye I get that mate - and know this wasn't directed at me.

If I was breaking the rules - i.e. I was the one going to the park to have a BBQ - then by all means, fair enough.

But all I've done every day is get out for my allotted exercise, which there is - thankfully and rightly - no rule against, at all.

In the case of the people down at the lake near me having BBQs yesterday, I didn't see it as I didn't go down that way when I went on a run. My mate was on a bike ride and he messaged me to say that it was busy.

With the weather turning now, while I don't want it to because it's at least been able to be a bit brighter in a crap time and it's nice to have that rather than constant rain, it should mean you don't get big groups of people who aren't out to exercise or for 'essential' trips (however you qualify that) - nobody is off down to a lake to have a BBQ when it's 13 degrees and hammering it down, are they?

Yep it wasnt a dig at you mate, i just think its funny is all "I was out today and so many people out, then i drove here and there were so many cars on the road".

But north and south of the border in Ireland there ARE differences, and that surely points to the different approach adopted by governments.
RoI closed non-essential businesses and schools earlier than we did in NI. That being said, the public were out ahead of the Executive in terms of taking kids out of schools themselves before they closed.

The week before my son’s preschool closed, attendance went from 30 down to 6.

You'd have to account for population density of the top 10 biggest towns/cities on the island 5 of them are in the north but only with a third of the population it's a very much more British way of living and if you have more more densely populated country then local air pollution will be higher.

But I am allowed to go out on a bike ride? That's not an 'arbitrary rule' at all. The government have made it clear you are allowed to do that.

I don't go out having BBQs in parks or meeting my friends?

It's arbitrary as there's no more science behind it than the decision of France, Spain, and Italy to ban residents from going out on their bikes. From the last few trips to my local park, I would say the average cyclist riding around it probably passes within 2 metres of a hundred people or so, but it's fine for them to do so because the government says so. Equally, going on a ten hour bike ride is just as fine as going for a 30 minute bike ride, because the government says so. Now the NHS says to stay indoors and save lives, but you ignore that because you really want to go out for a bike ride so hang on what the government says and not what the NHS says.

*shrug

It's completely arbitrary and reliant upon a degree of common sense.

NI population density - 133 per square km
ROI population density - 68 per square km

Watch this from 45-46 minutes (Dr Rachel Clarke):

If everyone wears them then they are dramatically successful. If you wear them for yourself, they're not. Ergo, everyone needs to wear them.

Cmon Dave, you're an academic. Something peer reviewed would be great :-)

Well, I'll leave the comparison to those who live on the island. Maybe others will agree/disagree with you, but Ild suggest Ireland is in a good position to test the differences (good or bad) of polity in this virus.

Okay I understand that. I'm in the fortunate position of not having to go to a park for my exercise and can go to places where I see a few dog walkers at most and can keep my distance. It's really not hard - so common sense is used. Just like I wouldn't go on a 10-hour bike ride 50 or 100km away from home. I can do routes which are nearby like I've been through - so again, I'm using common sense. I had that fall and yes, I have been more careful since then. Stayed off the bike for a few days to stick to running so I'm not risking another bad fall and having to end up in hospital and waste resources. But I could quite easily get hit by an idiot driver doing 70 everywhere because the roads are quiet, couldn't I - and there are plenty of people doing that.

The government are allowing people to get out and exercise because it's important. It's important for mental and physical health. Keeping people locked in their homes like Spain and Italy have done is, I think, bordering on cruel, whatever the reasons for doing so.

The NHS hasn't said anything, as far as I'm aware, that is different to the message has come from the government. And the lockdown as it is seems to have worked like it has in those other countries badly impacted by this (not the ones which got ahead of it - and those countries have all allowed exercise too, i.e. Germany, Norway etc).

FWIW my view is that Leo Varadkar handled the crisis much better than we did in NI. Of course, unfortunately, everything here is seen through the prism of local politics and there were tensions in the Executive over whether to take the lead from Dublin or London.

Instead of waiting months for these jarg antibody home test kits to maybe work - why not do the sensible thing and have every local GP practice nationwide arrange appointments with everyone registered over the coming weeks who currently haven't got symptoms / have previously had symptoms to get a blood test to determine if there are antibodies in their system.

I should be kin leading this covid response we would be out of lockdown alot bloody quicker.

On another note, a family friend who has lived in Spain for the last 15 years or so and is/was currently building and looking to open a restaurant.

He's been speaking to my dad and I think he's been in touch with the government over there as they look to all get back on their feet. He got some instructions through yesterday - I guess this is being sent out to businesses which have been impacted by this.

May 12: Small shops, workshops opening etc

May 23: Opening of public parks

May 25: Opening of personal services (believe this means hairdressers etc)

May 26: Opening of the national transit of the population

June 1: Opening of cafes, restaurants and bars (my dad's mate is gonna open his just as a takeaway at first I believe, to see how this goes)

June 6: Opening of study centres - not necessarily students returning to school

June 7: Opening of hotels and tourist accommodation

June 19: Opening of international transit of the population

June 23: Opening for the performance of shows and sports

Whether that works or not, we'll have to wait and see I suppose. Some of that seems early to me - bars back in June etc - but I suppose they're trying all they can to have some form of tourist season if possible. Whether anyone can get there is another matter altogether.
