Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Think about it more and you might understand what I mean
I don’t think you know what you mean. If the argument is that this has been caused by years of underinvestment in the NHS, then the current situation where almost unlimited resources have been thrown at it almost pays heed to it. The answer clearly isn’t just to pour more money in, otherwise we wouldn’t have the death figures we currently have.

The issue we currently have is that our ability to manufacture medical supplies within our own country has been highlighted to be a huge flaw, there’s a PPE shortage because we, along with a vast number of other countries, are reliant on China who can’t supply the demand. It’s all well and good that the money is there to buy stuff, but it’s pretty useless when the stuff isn’t there to be bought.

There’s clearly not been enough lessons learned from previous Pandemics that have happened across the world in previous years and within a global economy that’s poor.

There’s also the issue that we’ve been told for years that the increased rates of obesity was essentially a ticking time bomb for health in this country. With research showing that elevated BMI is a risk factor, the countries failure to address that is also a huge issue. Arguably, advice from authorities on this has been poor for decades and the ‘health food’ industry has spread so much misinformation that it is no surprise that people don’t know what to eat or what constitutes a ‘high’ level of exercise. The growing rates of respiratory disease in the country doesn’t help either.

But I’m sure you meant all that, and weren’t just desperately back tracking after looking like a tit for having a go at a 99 year old.

Which is also why we cant have face masks, btw. If these butchers cant get PPE in place there's no chance of them securing 70 million face masks.

Vote Tory - get killed.

Vote Labour, come second, then during a major pandemic spend all your time arguing about an internal Labour report about anti semitism......focus on the big issue as always......

RE masks - I dont think wearing a basic mask outdoors will massively help when NHS staff are getting infected with better equipment.

Unless you are going to venture outdoors in a space suit I imagine most of us will be getting this at some stage unless a vaccine comes quickly.
It isn’t to protect yourself - it is to stop your own (possibly infected) droplets spreading to others and onto surfaces where other people can pick them up.

And the evidence of S Korea, Germany, Norway, Veneto in Italy etc would suggest you can control the spread to manageable levels without a vaccine with widespread testing and contact tracing that catches someone infected early and isolates them.

Surely masks will only be effective in the short term whilst in semi lockdown? once pubs and restaurants etc open back up I would say its unrealistic to imagine most folk wearing masks on a summer weekend and potentially it could be worse with people touching their faces taking it on and off.

I agree on the testing and isolating but by the time the UK Government gets their act together we'll have likely all had it!

Pubs and restaurants will indeed be difficult, not least as you say because you will have to take the mask on/off. But cutting down the transmission in other shops, offices and public transit would still count for a lot of the potential vectors for infection.

Agree masks are hot and uncomfortable, particularly in summer, and so public acceptance would be an issue.

But faced with a choice of rolling lockdowns to avoid overwhelming the healthcare system vs wearing a mask in public I think most people would prefer the latter.
.
As for the testing :(, same here in the US.

No, they'll prove the virus had been genetically modified, the genome sequence has already been studied by leading scientists around the world, there are signs it's been modified, there are parts of other viruses in it like HIV.

China are in cover up mode, they won't release samples to the Amercians because they know the truth of its origins lies in those samples.

Once again....link us to the studies to back this up. I would be very interested in reading them.

Our total is believed and theirs is a laughing stock.....well it would be a laughing stock if their virus wasn’t killing people all over the planet.....
Err ONS themselves have said that the UK official numbers are likely a vast undercount and that is before you get into the timeliness of the reporting, especially over weekends.
The ONS also said its data showed that 6,236 deaths involving the coronavirus in England and Wales had occurred this year up to April 3, and registered by April 11.

That’s 50% higher than the 4,093 deaths reported on April 4 by the U.K.’s health department. The ONS didn’t include figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

“There is a difference in the numbers as we include all deaths where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate even if only suspected, and we include deaths that happened in hospital and in the community,” the ONS said on Twitter.

In contrast, the official U.K. coronavirus death toll only includes those that occurred in hospitals.

This was my issue with the old bloke raising money, it's not him I have an issue with... But the distraction from the main issues and why charity is being used to fund the NHS? .. Insane and unsustainable
Not reported much he won't speak to that prat of a Prime Minister, or his tale of his mother having to pay for the doctor to do some some stitching on him as a child for a deep face cut, as it was before the inception NHS...
