Absolutely incredible the difference a competent government can have!!!!!

Germany's Health Minister Jens Spahn says the country’s coronavirus outbreak is under control, after a decline in the infection rate.
As we mentioned earlier, Mr Spahn says the number of recovered patients has recently been consistently higher than the number of new infections - showing the lockdown has been successful.

"The outbreak has, as of today, become controllable and manageable again," he told a news conference, adding that the health care system had "at no time been overwhelmed so far".

Figures published by Germany's disease control agency indicate the infection rate had dropped to 0.7 - meaning each infected person passed the virus to less than one other.

However, the number of fatalities is still rising, as is the number of infected health care workers.
Germany has been praised for its aggressive testing efforts. It has almost 138,000 positive cases, according to Johns Hopkins University tracking, and 3,868 people have died nationally with the virus, which is a relatively low number.

The money's going to NHS Charities rather than the NHS itself

See https://www.nhscharitiestogether.co.uk/what-we-do/

Plainly there's some overlap between what the charities which sit under that umbrella and the NHS itself do, so there's an argument to be made for those things to be directly funded from taxation. But a lot of things they do sit outside mainstream healthcare.

If someone locally did a fund raising effort for Alder Hey, we might have similar thoughts about why their work isn't centrally funded, but we probably wouldn't lose much sleep over it. Same goes for hospices which are mainly funded by charities.

Thanks for that, it’s not widely known and could really do with being better promoted.

All this talk about the government is going to be financially screwed in all this but I'd imagine there will be a fair amount coming in by way of inheritance tax at this rate.

Probably not, TBH.

IHT is a tiny fraction of the total tax base, the 3 main pillars being Income, NIC, & VAT, all 3 of which are going to take a hammering due the the curent situation.

The reality is that when we get past this crisis, our economy is going to operating with much higher national debt and therefore lower growth rates in the future. Taxation will certainly need to be increased, and not just on the comfortably well-off.

It's not a secret mate, the Chief Exec of NHS Charities has been interviewed on national TV a few times to explain what they do and where the money will go, and it's pretty clear on the JustGiving page that it's for the Charities

We all have our prejudices and often jump to conclusions. Stopping, and checking the facts occassionally can save us having the odd rant, although, to be fair, I'm a big fan of pointless rants !

Lockdown 'could be extended until June'

Dominic Raab has suggested that the coronavirus lockdown could last until June as the Government announced a three - week extension to the current restrictions.

Speaking at the daily covid - 19 press conference at Downing street, the foreign secretary dispelled hopes that conditions could be lifted entirely by May bank holiday, adding that there could be ongoing local lockdowns well into the Summer to avoid the eruption of any new hotspots.

Considering we are into lockdown week 4 and 800+ people are still dying every day - the best solution come the end of this current 3 week extension would be to keep the most vulernable / elderly in lockdown with priority testing whilst the working age are allowed back into work / businesses open with social distancing?

The economy is going to collapse if we keep in lockdown whilst every other country starts opening up.

Anyone who thought conditions would be entirely lifted in 3 weeks for the bank holiday is delusional. If things get lifted, it will be very gradual and stage by stage.

Distraction from the main issues? You’re right, I don’t even know why we are in lockdown or the issues the NHS and care homes are facing. Turn on a TV and all that’s reported is sunshine and happiness.

Jesus wept.
Think about it more and you might understand what I mean

Just had a text from my GP surgery.

"A clinical trial into treatment for COVID 19 is occuring. If you have had continuous cough etc etc please go to www.blah blah."

Anyone else had it?

I think for those who for some reason thought that things were going to ease off after this new three week extension this was a bit of a wake up call.

I knew that we would still have some form of restrictions in place well into May/June but I'll be concerned if no restrictions are removed whatsoever after these 3 weeks considering most of Europe have plans into May to start opening back up things such as small businesses, shops etc.

Most of Europe have competent leadership.
