Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

Because, frankly, that is the only viable solution to this? One way or the other there has to be immunity in the population or we wouldn't be able to leave our houses ever - because any disease could kill us.

I agree with you on the rest - if they advised it people would but then again people are anyway. Like I wear gloves whenever I go in the supermarket/shop (very rare) and my Dad will wear a mask and gloves etc.

But in terms of beating this virus the only way to do it is for people to be immune to it one way or the other. Until there's a vaccine - and that could be a year off - then what is there to be done?

More people are going to die from the repercussions of the reaction to this virus than the virus itself anyway unless there's a vaccine in the next few months.

But all of the above doesn't mean I'm happy with our useless government. I think, know, they should be doing more. But in terms of general strategy surely the only long-term one is for people to be immune?
I dont see any evidence of a majority of people wearing face masks.

Correct.

Unfortunately there’s this narrative going around that the choice is lockdown or herd immunity. That’s just not the case.

A vaccine could be years away. The only viable future for our country in the next 12 months is allowing more people to catch the virus. Simple as.

It's grim and - because I'm certainly not a scientist and I doubt most people on here are who are pointing this out - it seems simple enough/common sense to realise this and it would have been prudent and sensible for our government, knowing this was going to have to be the strategy in one way or the other, do as much as possible to increase capacity of the NHS beforehand etc.

That's not to say lockdown wouldn't have been required - because I think a 4-6 period, looking at it now, was always going to be, at the very least, needed to slow the spread.

But if the NHS has more capacity, it should have meant fewer deaths in this initial period. But as we're now starting to see, the lockdown is helping because it's all a game of catch up.

I didn't say a majority, in fairness. But there are a decent number who are taking those extra precautions. Whether it's with a mask or a scarf or whatever.

I haven't worn one, so I won't judge. But all I do is go on my bike or on a run and very occasionally to the shop - if I was putting myself and others at risk more then I would do. It's probably just getting into the habit of doing it - like I now wear the gloves and stuff if I'm off the shop.

She was laughing at Piers not giving her a chance to talk, pretty obvious to anyone with half a brain.

Stupid of her yes, but not helped by the fact that loads of idiots like Piers intentionally make out she was laughing at people dying.
No, that's not true at all. I watched the whole of the interview and she laughed even after she was told that he (Morgan) was holding up to the studio camera a newspaper headline that had the number of deaths in care homes.

She is scum. And she's typical of many senior people in this butcher's government.

A decent number doesn't get the job done, I'm afraid.

We have to have the numbers right up their for mask wearing to be effective.

Be very aware of this: mask wearing IS a huge part of controlling the spread of the virus, but our government are out of step with most civilised nations by failing to instruct its people to wear them. They do that because they know they'll be asked to provide them, and they have proven beyond all question to be utter failures in preparedness and also in procurement of vital gear.

The lockdown is about slowing the spread rather than stopping it. Stopping it is not really an option without a vaccine. The virus isn't going to just go away in the next few weeks and I'm not aware of any credible sources pushing the narrative of lockdown or immunity.

Slowing down the spread so those who require hospital treatment have a better chance of coming out alive at the end of it. Let it run riot through the nation and the hospitals will not have the capacity and less people make it through.

About 45% of all covid-19 deaths in Ireland have been in care homes so that's a rough guide, you can double the official figures for deaths in the UK if they've only been including deaths in hospitals.
I wouldn't be surprised at those levels give that they aren't being tested. Are they being tested in Ireland or are they just being listed as suspected CV like here?

Germany has changed its tune on this recently. Starting to say masks are effective now whereas it hadn't in the past. Long way to go to everyone wearing them here though. At a guess I'd say max 20% of people here if not less are wearing them from what I've seen.
