California is also advising everyone to wear them when go out.
Our government is advising "they're of no use....erm, hold on they might be, we'll see what the global evidence says....erm....we've looked and we cant make up our mind....sorry, just hold on a minute we think it might be ok in some circumstances...maybe..."

Useless bunch of spanners.

If widespread use of masks in public would reduce the chances of another lockdown how open do you think people in UK would be to it?

Quite a few already wear them. I think that most would prefer that health and care workers had them instead. When I was in ICU, the proper ones the staff used, are single use, so I am unconvinced they are little more than a placebo for the general public.

What an absolutely useless incompetent shithouse of a man Matt Hancock is. Had the audacity on TV to say "there isn't enough demand for covid-19 tests" like testing should be getting done all over the country not just on people with obvious signs so we can have a good idea of the true transmission rate.

Do we have any idea what % of those losses are down to non-Covid19 conditions?
Haven’t seen any decent data analysis of it unfortunately, you’d think a fair proportion are the heart attack/strokevictims that doctors aren’t seeing turn up in ERs anymore.
Presumably comparing the increase in at home deaths between those cities with large outbreaks like New York and say San Francisco where things have been controlled might give some clue.

Might help in minimising the effects of the mask wearer coughing or sneezing but then so would a handkerchief.

Our instructuons here in California are non surgical masks because of that shortfall in PPE. The idea is that they don’t protect you, just stop you from spreading a stray sneeze to all and sundry.
That's why wearing a mask even if you don't feel sick can be a good idea.

If you cough or sneeze, the mask can catch those respiratory droplets so they don't land on other people or surfaces. "So it's not going to protect you, but it is going to protect your neighbor," says Dr. Daniel Griffin at Columbia University, an expert on infectious diseases. "If your neighbor is wearing a mask and the same thing happens, they're going to protect you. So masks worn properly have the potential to benefit people."

But wearing one gives the impression that you wont get it. A non surgical mask would not prevent droplets from a sneeze getting beyond one anyrate.
