Confirmation that, on things that REALLY matter, this country has become a basket case banana republic on the edge of Europe.

A shameful moment in the nation's history.

Take a bow HM Government.
The EU are doing much worse after talks the other night their chief medical officer resigned - Italy are not happy with the lack of help of them too?
I do agree we were slow off the mark, and if you compare our PPE to Spain's on the front line it's chalk and cheese......

Serious point now. I speak as a frontline NHS staff member.

Matt Hancock says (with no examples cited) that PPE has been used in cases where it was not needed.

Firstly, when did he get his medical degree? Oh yeah. He didn't.

Secondly, how can staff be using it in what he deems unnecessary circumstances, when there still isn’t enough of it being supplied?

Honest to God, lions led by donkeys is an insult to donkeys at the moment.

Time will tell I suppose. I'm more inclined to save any post mortem until all of this has shaken out. I don't think this will be over until a vaccine is found.

Fair points, for a country with a border with four other countries though and first cases around the same time as over here, i think they are doing well containing, considering we have a natural advantage as being islands.

Its the mask piece im interested in as they and Sweden have approached their management strategy of this virus that bit differently to WHO advice. The mask piece is something i think we should be looking at analysing from the Czech Republic given it could be an important management facet during this as opposed to after it.

It's from the Royal College of Physicians Grouch.

I dont think they understand the huge pressures on PPE. Im not sure what its like over there but if someone spikes a tempeture and shows a second symptom we are on full droplet precautions and PPE, it might be the virus or it might be a more day to day infection, but it does put a huge but important draw on PPE, but vital to keep health care staff safe.

How are you doing over there locally mate, was thinking of you and hoping you were doing ok in your place?

Pretty much the same protocol.

We’ve only just got goggles and visors though. Thanks for your thoughts, and same to you ;)

The mask is a bit of a bugbear, as from relatives on the ground, they have had no instructions over the safe handling of them. Speaking to the step father-in-law yesterday who does meals on wheels type deliveries, and he has the same masks and gloves on all day, bar when he takes them off to have a smoke. Masks and gloves work in a clinical setting because they're used for one procedure and then replaced.

It's also the case that the vast majority of people are wearing cotton masks, often having sewed them at home themselves, so the protection is nowhere near as robust as it might be, and they're not practicing social distancing measures very robustly. As said, many Czech folk have weekend cottages (from the communist days when overseas travel was largely banned), and many have still been visiting those regularly, often with family and friends coming together (it's common for the cottage to be a family cottage so used by the extended family).

It's certainly an interesting one from a purely intellectual point of view, but with quite a number of elderly relatives there, hopefully they continue to confound logical expectations.

Like the idea of ‘Enhanced Shielding’ (that I thought was a very good idea from the start). Elderly and vulnerable kept in lockdown with necessary support to get supplies, medicine, medical care. Low risk groups allowed to return to as normal a life as is possible. Total shutdown is only prolonging this nightmare for everyone. We can’t just sit around playing the fiddle for a vaccine whilst Rome burns.

Ok, I heard it on the radio news so didn’t get the source.

Either way it still angers me that there simply isn’t enough of it being distributed quickly enough.

This shouldn’t have to be rationed in the first place.

Looking at the article, it seems like Public Health England have issued guidance on the correct use of PPE. Is that something you guys on the frontline are aware of?

We’re following local and national policy mate.

In the correct cirmucstaces, it’s difficult to see what situation is deemed unnecessary use to be honest, short of pinching the gear to go round the Asda.

The WHO has gone full circle on masks in the week, but i agree in the main, its important to use a mask properly or not at all. In a way its mock herd immunity if they became common, used correctly, i think they offer a degree of looking after each other. The Czech situation will make an interesting study in time, presuming things stay the way they do. As will Sweden. Fingers crossed anyhow that your relatives over there stay safe and well.

(I'm paraphrasing the wife here) An example is (apparently) walking in corridors, when you only need to wear masks and stuff if you're escorting a patient, otherwise, you're not advised to. Sadly she's experienced situations with colleagues freaking out a bit, so I can see scenarios where it's not perhaps being used as judiciously as it might be, although as you say, it's a horrible situation and ideally there would be sufficient slack to allow for that. If we're relying on people being cool as a cucumber 100% of the time then that's asking a lot.
