Police ‘days away’ from checking shopping trolleys as lockdown rules flouted

A police chief has said his force is only “a few days away” from introducing measures such as road blocks and searching shopping trolleys as people continue to flout the coronavirus regulations.

Northamptonshire Police Chief Constable Nick Adderley said a “three-week grace period” is over in the county – and the force will now be issuing fines and arresting people breaking the rules.

He said further measures will also be implemented should people continue to flout the regulations – including “marshalling” supermarkets and checking the items in baskets and trolleys.

Mr Adderley said forces are “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” when it comes to policing the new rules, and he added that Government guidance on how to police the rules “could be even clearer”.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, he said: “I really need to emphasise the point, this is about saving people’s lives, this is the really serious end of what we do.

“The role of the police is to preserve lives and protect property and we have to do that and we will do that.

“If things don’t improve, and we don’t get the compliance we would expect, then the next stage will be road blocks and it will be stopping people to ask why they are going, where they’re going.

“This is about reasonableness and if people are not reasonable in terms of the journeys and the trips they are taking, they are going to fall foul of the law.

“We will not, at this stage, be setting up road blocks. We will not, at this stage, start to marshal supermarkets and checking the items in baskets and trolleys to see whether it’s a legitimate, necessary item.

“But again, be under no illusion, if people do not heed the warnings and the pleas I’m making today, we will start to do that.”
He stressed the force is “only a few days away” from that point.

On the clarity of Government guidance on policing the regulations, Mr Adderley said: “The law itself in terms of the five or six points that have come out in terms of the Coronavirus Bill – they are quite simple in terms of their narrative.

“But the interpretation of that is very, very difficult.

“The issue about, what is a necessary item, only go out for necessities – what is a necessity?

“If we’re stopping somebody because they’ve bought a barbecue set or they’ve bought a child’s toy, you could argue that’s not necessary.

“On the other hand, you could argue it absolutely is necessary – because in terms of the mental health and trying to keep people entertained over this period of lockdown, that is very necessary.

“So the nuances and the interpretation is really ambiguous – that’s why I’m saying to officers, use your common sense, use your discretion.

“I think the guidance could be even clearer, but it’s where do you draw the line?”
What a total knob. I don't know what he wants made clearer but it's clear to me that the government don't want his officers going round supermarket checking trollies. If that's getting his officers to use common sense God help us

Dominic Raab Signals Likely Coronavirus Lockdown Extension Next Week

Dominic Raab has signalled the coronavirus lockdown is likely to be extended next week.

The first secretary of state, who is deputising for Boris Johnson while the prime minister is in intensive care with the virus, said the government would make a decision on the lockdown towards the end of next week.

But he stressed the UK had not yet reached the peak of the epidemic and that ministers cannot consider lifting the restrictions until that passes.

“We are not done yet,” he said.

“We must keep going.”

Raab said it was still “too early” to lift the lockdown restrictions in place across the UK.

He added: “It’s been almost three weeks and we’re starting to see the impact of the sacrifices we’ve all made.

“But the deaths are still rising and we haven’t yet reached the peak of the virus. So it’s still too early to lift the measures that we put in place.

“We must stick to the plan and we must continue to be guided by the science.”

He also said data was being gathered on the impact of social distancing and the closure of many businesses which would be analysed by the government’s Sage science committee.

“While the early signs suggest that they are having the impact we need to see, it’s too early to say that conclusively.

“Sage will meet next week to discuss the latest evidence and we will keep the measures we’ve put in place under review.”

Mr Raab added: “We don’t expect to be able to say more on this until the end of next week.

“The measures will have to stay in place until we’ve got the evidence that clearly shows we’ve moved beyond the peak.”

On a side note - In the same way that Brexit made people hate each other (i.e lots of animosity from the younger generations towards their Brexiteer parents etc) - Do you think that this whole mess will make the British public more distrustful and negative towards other members of the public?

Find myself disliking other people more and more each day

Fact, it's already happening. When i'm out for a jog it's not uncommon for people to be tutting or bemoaning you as they walk on by. Yesterday I heard a bloke say "What's the point when all this lot are here" or something to that decree in reference to runners around the park. Irony obviously isn't lost on him.

It's crazy, I asked a bloke did he have the time a week or so ago and he almost jumped out of his skin. People are terrified.

I honestly believe that if the lock down was lifted or reduced, folk would still observe how it is now.

No, the overwhelming majority of people are doing the right thing by following the guidance and treating others with a bit of courtesy, plus a large number are actively helping people they barely know, or in some cases, don't know from Adam. I think that's something to build on.

There are a few people in the real world who I'd happily choke to death ( while wearing full PPE ) to get them out of the gene pool. But they're few and far between, and they're outnumbered by the crazies visible when I click on "Show Ignored Content", some of whom previously appeared to be reasonably intelligent posters. But don't let them distract from the huge amount of good being done by the ( mostly ) silent majority in the country.

Reuters trying to nail the two experts. The CSA put the guy down, “I don’t know what you’ve been told, but I know what happened”.....and goodnight.....

Raab refused to give assurances to non essential workers who are being forced into work. When are the police going to close down non essential companies?

They`re all too busy either playing Cluedo with Boris in St Thomas`s or trying to chat up the nurses whilst they are providing security for him, during his nice little holiday in ICU.

Was reading something the other day about a woman walking back from her local Sainsbury's in Scotland. She was pulled up by 2 coppers who demanded they showed her what was in her bag, she had a bottle of wine, crisps and a few other bits, the coppers deemed what she had in her bag as non - essential so they fined her £30.

I think to a degree that's right. If it lifted tomorrow i sure is hell wouldn't be out at the pubs. At the same time, you can bet they'd be heaving - Manchester police shutting down 600+ social gatherings this week is a sign of some of the disregard people have for this.
