and whey can't you do that? What difference does the time make?

Few reasons:

1) The government recommend necessary exercise only. Going out for several hours can in no way be construed as necessary. It's indulgent.
2) British Cycling recommend staying local, in large part so that you can walk yourself home in the event of a mechanical or other incident
3) Rare though accidents are, they do happen, and the last thing hospitals need right now is cyclists in A&E because they couldn't stay home (like the NHS beg us to do)
4) We all need to do our bit, and if people see cyclists doing what they like, then it will undoubtedly encourage them to do what they like too

They have said stay local and stick to routes you know and within your ability. Nothing about walking home. Accidents are rare, i'm probably more likely to have one in my car going to the supermarket.

Now is not a time to be discouraging exercise, we may all need that extra lung capacity. Fine if you want to use the Turbo, i hate them. I'll stick to the roads.

That really are the most transparently dishonest administration, it just sucks the life out of any goodwill I have for them in this situation.

cummings is utterly toxic
You do have to chuckle at those who vote for Johnson et al. And who will lap this up. It's very likely at best his own stated behaviours that has led him to be COVID19 patient... At worst has passed it on to his pregnant wife his elderly mother etc. Despite telling us not to do these things he glibly wise cracked the opposite. And now premptive eulogies of this buffoon and his one line politics. It is comical.

Not sure precisely what local means to you, but going 30-40km away from home certainly isn't what I'd refer to as local. It's not about discouraging exercise, it's about doing it in a sensible way. I would love to say I'm surprised that you adopt an "I'm alright Jack" attitude, but I'm really not.

People dont seem to get that you can do a fairly long walk or run without ever being far from your home. Multiple laps of a local area probably a good idea right now for any exercise.
