Current Affairs Coronavirus Thread - Serious stuff !!!

It's a tough one because the govt are experts in doing things like this. I knew one woman who was a carer and was ill so went to claim PIP, was refused then she said she had to go to another assessment a year later to see if she was still able to carry out her carers duties and almost lost that money. Also a few people have applied for Universal Credit as well as carers allowance but have ended up worse off.

I think once you claim UC you wouldn't be entitled to the reimbursement because you are already claiming some form of income, or that would be taken from you if you applied. These schemes seem to be deliberately confusing to deter people from using them or that they somehow end up out of pocket.

I hope that you've got enough to live on until June. My cousin the massive tax Dodger is waiting until then but has enough money stashed away from his undeclared earnings to live on. Only bonus is that he will get nowhere near what he actually earns and can't claim for 3 employees because technically they do not exist.

Cheers for the reply mate, yeah it's like things are designed to just pit you off, I can't be bothered going through all the crap trying to claim £120 a fortnight to then be told in June I'm not entitled to 80% wages because I made a claim so was no longer self employed or something

I've got enough to get by for the month and hopefully get my rebate end of April if its really needed if we're still on lockdown, hope the banks are helpful after all this as I'm eating my deposit I've been trying to save haha

Going out in your car or on your own in the street isn't doing damage though. It's spreading between households.

The most dangerous thing atm is going to the shop, mate.

There was a media report of general medical review this morning of an admittedly small sample saying they hadn’t found any examples of it spread shopping or even in the hairdressers. I think there is still so much to learn and it’s obviously only one set of data .

I was commenting more on the attitude of those people who seem to just be carrying on as if nothing was amiss. e.g. like the woman opposite me going out at least 4 times every day in her BMW, to do what exactly? We were told the peak was coming down the line and it’s now arriving by the looks of it. No, I don’t have the answers, nobody does right now, but people have to take personal responsibility for their actions, not strolling around the shops ‘browsing’. Just get what you need and get back home.

No argument with any of that mate I was talking more of what the plan is . That was where the discussion was , I just can’t figure it out As a strategy. Well I can but only as discussed .

You should be perfectly entitled to get UC to 'keep you going' until June.

I've tried for it myself but even though I've claimed online already had no look getting through for a phone appointment. I've accepted the fact that I'm not getting a penny of help from the government unfortunately.

Thanks BlueToff I'll check that, that's another thing that puts me off is the claim process, 5 weeks on a normal year but while hundreds of thousands are trying to get something I think is it worth it, probably won't see a penny of it till June anyway and hopefully were well back at work by then

Laughable. You think that clown is going to come out of this with thousands dead with anything other than a reputation in the gutter. That's insane. There isn't a spinning machine available that could sell that line to the serfs who put him in power on the promise of Brexit.

He'll be Chamberlain or worse. That's his historic legacy. An appeaser.

I’m sorry mate, but your hatred of Boris is clouding your judgement. Everyone and his dog believes that they made a mistake, PM/CSA/CMO. But no one set out to murder millions or thousands. They found out more and changed strategy within a week together with the various plans behind the scene. I fully expect that we will see yet another strategy and change of plan as we learn even more, or solutions come on line. It’s an evolving situation and anyone who thinks it is clear cut is just fooling themselves.......

My memory, like many these days, time wise anyrate, may be knackered.

But I thought that advice changed in a few days.

Was nearly a week, but the point was he was prepared to try and get away with it.

Tried to be smart and got called out. I know several business owners in the leisure sector in particular who are absolutely raging at him.

We knew what was coming in January, we didnt act till March.

Dress it up however you want, but I would expect criminal charges once the dust settles.

Ok mate I grasp that . Explain to me how that works . Stay at home for how long ? Will the virus stop ? Will it dissipate or disappear ? Not one country who have previously advocated lockdown have done so without large scale testing , the quote “you can’t fight a fire without knowing where it is “ has been used multiple times .

If we are on lockdown for say what Another 2 months you think it’ll have gone ? I hope so that’s great but No evidence suggests that , it doesn’t feel remotely like a plan to me . All the medical writing I’ve read , not Facebook I hasten yo add , stipulates lockdown and testing I’ve not seen one advocate of lockdown alone .

I’m staying in I’m not saying I’m not but I’m trying to figure out what the plan is , it makes sense to you that’s great . If you’d just lay out how it works other than easing the Initial pressure on the nhs then I’m genuinely eager to learn and that’s not sarcasm .

FFS. The policy is designed to put keep the peak load through the NHS at a minimum in order to prevent it being crippled and therefore deaths going up by multiples. That's been clear for a long time. Wider testing will be very welcome when it eventually comes online to understand how widespread the true infection rate is, but that doesn't contradict the current strategy that will minimize the rate of growth in new infections.

It's easy to criticize current policy from your armchair. But what is your alternative strategy? Herd immunity has already been rightly shot down due the unacceptable overwhelming of the health services. There are no easy solutions here.

He'll get a short term boost but long term he'll be hit with his "take it on the chin" interview, the "loads will die" defeatist press conference and the "Mitigate" strategy over and over again until it hurts him badly.

And that's before we mention how chronically underprepared the NHS was for this compared even to some Eastern European countries thanks to the Tories actions over a decade, as well as how Johnson threw thousands of small businesses under the bus for weeks by only giving "advice" to close...

If Labour are even semi competent under Starmer, they should be able to take full advantage of a political open goal.

Says the poster who insisted it was just a cold.......
