Cant just be that though. This is from a researcher in Italy's department of infectious diseases. So looks like they mass tested and seen the numbers grow. Wonder if we done that would our numbers spike?

Unfortunately, this virus came exactly at the same time when we had our influenza seasonal peak. And we knew that this could mask some of the early importations of COVID-19 because the symptoms are very similar.

So what happened is that we tested a patient that was critically ill that didn't have a direct link to travel or to known cases, and we found this person positive. And this, of course, led to an extensive tracing to try to understand what was going on. And this is why we tested a lot of people. And we found out early on that we had local sustained transmission. And then from there on, everything was activated very fast.

You're right i was being glib, although i still think it seems like classic Italian panic stations.

I'm at a loss to explain why it is like that to be honest.

A couple of observations:

My plane back from Taiwan yesterday was fantastic, the service was exemplary and I'd have no problem flying with China Airlines again. However, it was so quiet, the back four or five rows were literally empty which was great for me because I had an entire row to sleep on.

Secondly, I am concerned by the checks being done on inbound flights from affected areas. It was announced that passengers were unable to leave the plane until permission had been granted by the Quarantine Office, so I thought okay, there'll be a few people dressed in biohazard suits coming onto the plane to check us out, but nope, nothing, apart from a 30 minute wait on the plane and then straight through immigration.

Anyway, I'm now in my self-imposed isolation period.

Do you think people saw you heading to the back and they moved to avoid you? I kid I kid.

Glad to see it was relatively straightforward for you.

The 'test clinic' at the wife's place will apparently go live tomorrow. It's a 'drive through' clinic, where people will be communicated via cardboard signs through their windscreen and tested. The 'road' is very narrow, so it'll be one at a time, so presumably it will be appointment based rather than turn up and wait. The testers will be in full garb. Oh, and the test place is next to a secondary school, so you can probably expect photos/videos posted on social media by the end of tomorrow, coupled with stories of parents refusing to allow their kids to go to school (not to mention mothers with babies who would ordinarily go to the actual clinic, outside of which is this drive through testing setup). There are even grumblings from staff that they don't want to be anywhere near it, as it was kinda dropped on them on Friday. What can go wrong? o_O

I bet you turn up on your bike in full lycra

Tin foil hat time.. Italy has just quarantined 16 million people, the actions of governments seem to be excessive given the numbers of infected and dead, meanwhile experts are telling us not to panic which is it? If a government locks down a quarter of a countries population that will cause panic. Is there is something about this dose they are not telling us.

Was hearing on the radio just now that the same approach in Hubei province is considered effective in slowing community spread, and if we were to experience the same level of community spread here the same approach would be likely. In the same interview it was discussed how such an approach is a tricky thing for the brain to manage in terms of the balance between taking this seriously but not panicking. It was also emphasised that the mortality rate over 70 years old may be as high as 14%. Hence the need to take it seriously - but also to be 'socially responsible '.
