The virulence of this virus is currently estimated to be between 1.4-6.5 with a median estimate of 3.8%. To put this into perspective, the seasonal flu has a virulence of around 1.3%. In simple terms, this means that it spreads significantly faster than any known seasonal flu.
As for the death-rate, the CFR currently stands at around 3.8% (after excluding the Chinese reported CFR that many, including myself, see as being cooked). This is multiple times greater than the CFR of any seasonal flu (which is around .1%)
In addition to this, around 10% of cases require hospitalisation, which is more than 10 times the number of the seasonal flu.
There's no need to panic, but pretending that this is just another seasonal flu is an issue.
Wash your hands, don't touch your face, and limit person-to-person contact.

One thing about the numbers being ‘cooked’
Maybe they are, and maybe they are not. Declarative statements from people who have no real idea either way, are never helpful in either case...
But you must remember that China is not hermitically sealed. If a person comes down with this virus a team of astronauts will come to his house, and drag him away coughing and screaming.
People have phones, and are on social media, and reports like this, spread though the populace like wildfire. It cannot be suppressed, and if such a person does have the virus, the people living in close proximity to him/her will soon know about it, and will have to suffer the consequences of strict quarantine measures as well...
Further more, there is simply no real benefit for a government that fears social unrest, and instability above all else, to cook the numbers, because they know full well that this virus is their biggest enemy as well.
In this case they have every reason to be as transparent as possible, not only because they have no choice really anyway, but because they know that only by doing this will they effectively contain the disease. Transparency is the only way to beat it and they realized this a few months back....
You also have to remember that people in the west are subject to, and every bit as susceptible to propaganda (hostile and passive aggressive) as the Chinese are to their own. The genius of western propaganda is that nobody even knows it is there, which is why poor Americans continue to vote against universal healthcare, believing it to be somehow ‘communist’ or evil.
The real cover up is taking place in the US, but it’s nothing a bit more propaganda and good old xenophobia won’t fix...
We all tend to focus on the numbers but this is heartbreaking on the human side

Read something this morning that predicts 96MM cases and just under 500,000 deaths* although I forget the timetable (6 months or less if I remember.)

I hope you're aware that there's an entire generation of Chinese people who believe that the Tienanmen Square massacre didn't happen - and if it did it was a result of NATO/US involvement.

It spreads via coughing doesn't it? What does washing hands do? A virus expert from Aberdeen Uni said as much on radio 4 earlier. Pretty much a waste of time, hence why he's still happy to shake hands etc.
