You could argue that he probably would have survived anyway but likely to have been far more unpleasant process. Given the histrionics of those with mild cases of “man-flu”, viral pneumonia is probably best avoided even if entirely survivable.
Enlightened self interest is as valid a reason as concern for those less healthy in your community to do basic things like personal hygiene and avoiding others when sick.
