Martinez could come in and have us playing some wonderful stuff and get us challenging for the top four........... or he could do a Mike Walker, he was the man who was going to wake the sleeping giant apparently.

Media narrative in not fitting facts shocker.

It was Kenny Jacket who got them their first promotion. He took them from near the bottom of the fourth flight to near the top of the third.

Then Martinez took them up into the second flight. Sousa took them a little closer to the top of that divison. Rodgers got them promoted to the top flight and Laudrup got them to a cup final.

Martinez changed their style of play, sure, but they were already on the up before he took over.

I honestly believe we'd get some brilliant managers go for it if it became available. We wouldn't have to be looking at Martinez, Adkins and the like assuming Bill kept the wage at a similar level.

I argued this point the other day. I agree, if the process was handled calmly & properly (I know!) & there was a period allowing applications & public (& private) 'hats in the ring' time, then I'm convinced there'd be plenty of potential suitors for the EFC hotseat.

I'd guarantee that there'd be better quality interested than bleeding Martinez. However, I fully expect Bill to knee jerk into a panicked appointment & Martinez looks like the path of least resistance. God help us.

To me that's why I wouldn't like him here. I admire his principles but he's trying to play continental football on a rugby pitch. Your manager needs to be able to adjust to the situation at hand.

In one.

I remember last season at Goodison, when we were in shocking form they turned up & he had their donkey backline trying to play out from the back, but they simply didn't have the quality on the ball to carry it off. We were closing them down, they were giving it away, hoofing it, & looking like rabbits in the headlights. It wa obvious to a blind man that he was asking players who just weren't technically good enough to play in a style that he wanted them to play. As a result they were total gash.

He persevered with his ego trip management style until they were on the point of being doomed, he then got them to go more direct & hey presto they started winning a few games & stayed in the PL with a combination of endeavour & pure fluke.

He was lauded as a hero for keeping them up, when the reality was his obsession with style over results, had created the position that they found themselves in. For me he's a goon, I'm out.
