Arsene what's your gut feel on why Arsenal won't spend mega?

Is it Wenger or do you think the board are reining him in OR the stadium is sucking up more dough than disclosed?
bit of both. they signed for some long term commercial and sponsorship deals when they wanted to build a stadium. those deals were great back then, but are very average in todays world. so they do withhold some money until 2014 when some new deals are coming in. In that mean time they have been heavily dependent on CL money and breaking even in the transfer market at worst. The reason they have been saving alot of money is they were worried about missing on CL and suffer for few years and fall way behind. Now they have enough to manage without CL for a season. So they had some money, but decided to hold back until their finance got better. Also arsenal made alot of money selling flats build on highbury. Its that money and the CL money that has kept the club going. Take that out and they pretty much break even. Thats breaking even without buying for more than you sell. So the finance looks great on the outside, but when you look deeper, its hasnt been great.

Also the push from 3-4 to first is the most expensive. If they want to sign world class players to be the best, they have competition from bigger and richer clubs. its really hard place to be in

Wrong there, mate.

I'm pretty sure I've been told plenty of times that if we can only finish fourth we'd be basically be handed Messi in a bed of gold.

But, yeah my heart bleeds for you. All those days out to barcelona and munich, the cup finals, the title races, it must be horrible.

Ah right.

Nobody thinks Wenger is anything but an excellent manager who has achieved loads.

Yet even he has managed to win nothing with Arsenal in the last 8 years despite spending an additional HALF A BILLION on his squad in that time.

How do you explain that?

Bad buys who dont have impact straight away, key players leaving, other teams getting better and spending more.

Until recently they were the 3rd/4th best side in the country for a decade. Their spending reflected that. The same as United, City and Chelsea.

Walter Smith got Rangers to a Europoean cup final and lost..would you have Walter back?

It's amazing how often godawful managers (Smith, McClaren, Ramos, McLeish, Martinez etc) can manage to do things that are too hard for the best manager in the world to do, like.

Like win at anfield, or win the league cup or reach the europa final.

Very odd, one would almost think if a bunch of no hopers can do it that it might not be as terribly difficult as Moyes makes out.

haha thats what i tell arsenal fans when they talk about how much they have suffered the last 8 years. But fans have no perpective and Arsenal fans cant believe things can get any worse than they are now

Of course not. Hence me calling him godawful.

no of course you would,nt even though he was hand picked by Bill and was hounded out of the club by the fans due to the league position. This cup final malarky is not that straight forward is it fella.....crack on...dont forget to take your tea brakes.

Moyes and money: I'm sympathetic to a degree. Of course, Billy Liar is to blame ultimately - he's an absolute disgrace - but has Moyes been more onboard with the 'business plan' of the owners than he ever should have been? He's been way too closely associated with Kenwright and way too understanding with how they want to run the club without investment. He's not entirely blameless.

The other thing with Moyes (I've mentioned this before) is that he's been 'time-rich'. Not many managers get the amount of time he's had to fashion teams the way he wants. Has he done enough in his time here to suggest he's used 11 years wisely? Probably. Results-wise he's had us in very respectable company at the end of most seasons. On the other hand, we've hardly played consistently with a great deal of flair, and I think someone else may have gotten a better standard of football from the players we've had through in his time.
