A Joe Royle / Duncan Ferguson Combo.. Im In !
bit of both. they signed for some long term commercial and sponsorship deals when they wanted to build a stadium. those deals were great back then, but are very average in todays world. so they do withhold some money until 2014 when some new deals are coming in. In that mean time they have been heavily dependent on CL money and breaking even in the transfer market at worst. The reason they have been saving alot of money is they were worried about missing on CL and suffer for few years and fall way behind. Now they have enough to manage without CL for a season. So they had some money, but decided to hold back until their finance got better. Also arsenal made alot of money selling flats build on highbury. Its that money and the CL money that has kept the club going. Take that out and they pretty much break even. Thats breaking even without buying for more than you sell. So the finance looks great on the outside, but when you look deeper, its hasnt been great.
Also the push from 3-4 to first is the most expensive. If they want to sign world class players to be the best, they have competition from bigger and richer clubs. its really hard place to be in
haha thats what i tell arsenal fans when they talk about how much they have suffered the last 8 years. But fans have no perpective and Arsenal fans cant believe things can get any worse than they are now
Honestly mate anyone who got to watch the likes of Henry, Bergkamp, Vieira, Pires, Van Persie, Fabregas etc do their stuff 20 odd games a season is blessed beyond belief, imo.
We were all watching Carl Tiler and Tobias Linderoth at the time.
Mind it goes both ways, clubs like Coventry would kill to be Everton, clubs like Luton would kill to be Coventry, etc, etc.
How do you explain Cardiff having played in more cup finals than us in Moyes time despite them never being a top flight club and operating on a budget tiny compared to ours?
In the league you play every team home and away over 38 games. At the end of that you can judge how good a team is.
In the cup you get your name drawn out of a hat.
Cardiff have done well but look at the draws they've had.
Only played 2 teams from the Premier League (both of whom got relegated that year) on their route to two finals.
Cardiff FA cup 2008
Chasetown
Hereford
Wolves
Middlesbrough
Barnsley
Then Portsmouth
Cardiff League cup 2012
Oxford
Huddersfield
Leicester
Burnley
Blackburn
Palace
Then Liverpool
Interesting stuff a lot of evertonians have a new stadium as the "holy grail" a cure all for everything, never bought it myself every example seems to make no difference or make things worse.
From the outside Arsenal seem the de facto standard of how to do it - win stuff, earn more, increase the season ticket requirement yet still the old glory days of Highbury are nowhere near. Illustrates to me it always comes down to management skill - if you lose it or never had it you're done.

New stadium is a must for Everton. As long as fans understand it will make things worse early on and put alot of pressure on the club financially early on and it would take years before you can profit from it.
Yeah but you still have to beat themn. We lose to lower league teams in the cups as much as we lose to prem teams.

We don't though. In the last four years:
Liverpool, Chelsea, Reading, Brentford, Chelsea, Leeds, Spurs
4-3 is pretty close to even, like. And that's with you cherrypicking the games.
