Come in David Nugent, your time is up...

Where would he fall in the pecking order do you think? AJ is without doubt the first choice striker but where would you place Vic and Vaughan after their performances this season? If they're 2/3 would we sign a new striker to play 4th choice? I appreciate that neither are likely to play an entire season but I would think between them they should be able to play 30/40 games next season. I know that injuries and suspensions will likely trouble us but am just wondering of the merits of signing a recently capped player to fill in as 4th choice striker. The very best sides do traditionally have 4 strikers of course so that could signal a good step for the side.

2nd he'd be, at the start anyways.

I dont wanna "over-spend" on him, but id love him here,

Ok, lets talk hyperthetically here. AJ is 26, Nugent 22, so both of those have at least 6 more years at the top. Would Vic/Vaughan stick around? Would it mean that the two primary strikers are rotated more? I'm just thinking out loud really as Nugent looks like being the replacement for Beattie who is currently 4th choice striker, 5th if you include McFadden.

Vaughan and Anichebe are always gonna be 3/4 choice strikers due to their age, their not gonna play week in, week out imo.

Moyes will defiently want them around though.

HOWEVER, with the prospect of several more games next season in the UEFA, it would not hurt to have a healthy contingent to pick from. He wouldn't be my first choice signing, I think the midfield needs some addressing first, but he certainly wouldn't hurt to have him onboard, IF the price is right.

Yes, I think you're right that an extra good player in the squad is always good and would allow us to rest Johnson rather than have him play on injured as he has this season. Just wondering quite how much Moyes has to spend and which areas he will be targetting.

What has been promising is the goals we've got from other players, especially recently. Arteta has 9 goals, Cahill 7, Fernandes looks a real goal threat, plus each of Saturdays defence has scored this season. Always nice to spread the goals around.

Don't forget that we still have Faddy for depth or, to be fair to him, potential second striker status, and then always the option of Timmy in his normal role with one up front. Although we are going to be rotating if we do anything at all in Europe.

I agree, we need a good young Carsley replacement (please not Barton) because Osman, Cahill and Arteta are not good enough defensively to break up the game in midfield, but if we could swap out Beattie plus a reasonable sum for Nugent, then I would say go for it...

Well this thread started off abpout Nugent and developed into striker order and midfield.

We need more players but who, that is it. Look at Lescott, where has he been playing for some time now -- left back. So should we be looking for a new CB as Lescott is filling our LB slot very nicely as Stubbs is getting on and we need cover. As for midfield this is awkward with Fernandes in the wings, do we need him and some one else or just him after all what about Da Silva.

Upfront a player who can operate wide would be nice, some how I cannot see McF filling this role. Can we be sure BT will be leaving rumour mill very quiet on him. Perhaps even if Nugent does come which is by no means certain Moyes may be planning to let no one go to make way. Has anyone considered that option?

Think we need to look to a central defender, midfielder, wide player and a striker. But what ever kitty Moyes has will also have to cover wages don't forget.

Especially now that we have qualified he would be a great signing, four main strikers would allow Moyes to rotate to handle the extra games.
I think 7 million was mentioned as a transfer fee, it could be good buisness.

I think 7 mill will be too much latch, dont forget that he has never played a game in the premiership, we paid 8.6 for AJ and he had premiership expierence, we knew what he could do, but 1.6 mill less then AJ for Nuge who hasnt played a game in this fantastic league yet?

hmmm im not too sure, id love us to sign him as i know hes going places but i dont wanna overspend on him and overspend so most of our budget is gone.

we have to bring in the quality that the likes of mega spending villa, pompey e.t.c are gonna bring in with their millions but not overspend too much.

I like Nugent and think he has potential, but thats all he is now - potential. I would like to see him in a blue shirt as he 's a blue himself. Bad thing is he played (and scored) for England, 6 mil is a bit too much when we could get better for our money. He has Newcastle written all over him for about 7 million.

I can see your point Cal, it's a fine balancing act when your transfer kitty is not that big and other areas of the side also need strenghening, a decent winger would not go amiss, but if, as i think someone else has mentioned on this thread, we could offload Beattie for about 4 million then Nugent would not overstretch our budget even at 7 million, and dont forget he's a lifelong Evertonian.

Yep i see your point, id love us to have him here, he'd be going straight on the back of my home shirt next season

Yeh good point, offloading places aswell (although not beatts :( ) will help us have a bigger transfer kitty.

michael ball filled in CB when needed.

anything over 3 million for nugent is too much for us at this time, we need a player that does the carsley stuff but can pass well also.

oh, and MGP, because we havnt had a solid left footer for a long long long long long long time. (hinchcliff, but he was a defender)
