Current Affairs Climate Change Demonstrations.....

I did not post it as a scientific rebuttal. My point being that Scientists are not always right and that as each year passes our knowledge should be increasing. Back in the 60’s when Scientists declared we were going into an ice age, those scientists were at the cutting edge, they really knew their stuff and had access to technology that was state of the art. But of course looking back, they didn’t really know and their technology was pitiful compared to that now available to any five year old child. So how can anyone, today, declare with absolute certainty that they are right, when the scientists 60 years from now will have even more technology, more data and will declare with absolute certainty that the previous scientists were wrong but they are right. Do you see my point, things change, we progress, we learn.......

Why don't we just make a cleaner, more sustainable global economy on the off chance? I'm not seeing a drawback.

Why are you judging them upon their image not their message. Totally missing the point. If one was a doctor and was saving your life would you still judge them then?

"They are trying to save the planet but have got crap songs so I am out"

The amount of fat old men on my facecock moaning about them as "bloody hippies" is incredible.

By image, I mean they are perceived as not being an inclusive group nor representative of society as a whole.

Nor me, we should be doing it anyway. But rational thoughts like this get lost in the “you’ve stolen my childhood and future” and “billions of children will die” comments from the current protests.....

To persuade most people to get on board with the message of radical change, the presentation also has to be correct.
But there was no message being put forward by anyone and it just so happens that the only people willing to put themselves in the firing line and get things started have an image you do not care for.

If they had done nothing then nothing would be happening now.

I think there's a place for different kinds of message. Mass protests and stunts often leave me cold, and I admit I was a bit "What can I do? Is it really that bad?" a few years ago and then I got a commission for a project where I spoke to weather presenters from all over the world and realized that Burkina Faso and Kenya were taking climate change more seriously than the USA and Belgium. So the idea that we shouldn't front up to the issue if we aren't citizens of China, for example, kind of became ridiculous.

However, some people need to be confronted with things in stark terms and I think some of the protest stuff and Greta Thunberg (spelling?) especially do this better than a thousand adverts on Dave with sad polar bears.

But it required statements like this in order to get people to take notice - and it worked. All kudos to them.

To be fair, a lot is happening in the UK and in Government.

I acknowledge they are helping to shape the debate and I acknowledge the importance of the message. I'll put it this way though, a more inclusive, representative movement will have more success going forwards.

And trust me mate there is no firing line. The Met are treating them very gently. If this was a load of us (Scouse Evertonians) blocking the streets of London and setting up camp before or after a match, the Met would be sending in the horses.

I also want to say I acknowledge we are only all having the conversation on this forum right now because of the demonstrations.

I'm glad it is a civil conversation also.

Labour's Green New Deal from Conference will hopefully become part of their manifesto in the upcoming election. It feels like a radical, yet more considered, mainstream and realistic strategy of change that that of XR.

I would point out that you are only having this conversation because I started it, as no one else was even bothered......
