Current Affairs Climate Change Demonstrations.....

Cool story. Do you disagree that there should be urgent action on climate change?

Of course. I recently voted Green Party in the European elections.

That I agree there should be urgent action doesn't meant these messengers are immune from criticism.

It is a very narrow, privileged and entitled demographic, some of whom who stray too much in to anarchic and frankly weird (to me) beliefs.

There is graffiti spousing the end of capitalism. There was a young woman (in her teens) crying that she didnt feel ready to get arrested and justifying this to two much older men. I walked past a group of them yesterday outside Westminster Abbey, holding hands and howling. There is mass chanting at police and the stifling of debate and the refusal to abide by Section 14 orders and move to Trafalgar Square.

But this is to kind of miss the point. If someone runs over to tell me my car is being stolen, I don’t take 20 minutes to criticise them cos I don’t like their trainers. I act.

Yeah, this really isn't a scientific consensus you're showing here. It's a poor article in a magazine. This isn't a they said/they said thing, this isn't both sides are equal. It has no relevance to this debate apart from the fact, as the article quoted explains, this has caused damage as it allows people free reign to use it to erroneously argue against climate change.
Pete’s right though - it was espoused at the time there’d be another ice age. It’s the same argument my mam uses during any discussion about climate change.

There will be though, that is nothing to do with what they are protesting about

It's a spectacularly nonsense argument. Some people said it was going to happen, it was in now way scientific consensus over an extended period that we were entering an ice age right then. HOWEVER, if you believe otherwise do you also use the argument that you don't believe in casts for broken legs because previously doctors used leeches for them? Or do you accept we make spectacular leaps forward with our understanding every single day?

Correct. This claim about the 1970’s ice age predictions has been challenged and shown to be incorrect by Peterson in 2008, who found that while there were some claims about a possible ice age, more peer reviewed papers in the 1970s predicted warming.

The ice age claim was because it was thought that the co2 would block the sun's heat. We now know the co2 is incubating the sun's heat.
Either way, the issue is excessive co2 which was identified decades ago and which we have done nothing to reduce, the tired claim about ice ages is just a diversion to avoid having to do something.

I work in Westminster so they're literally right there (and have been all week). I can make observations about them separate from the message.

They have a serious image problem, especially if they want to create a mass, representative movement.

I’m not saying that what Pete is claiming is right, merely pointing out that it’s a belief held with people within his generation because it’s what they were told at the time. It’s the same as people being skeptical when it comes to weather reports because it rains when it was predicted to be sunny.

As @dead_soft points out, things move forward, sciences ability to predict change has been abetted by huge advances in computational power. Again, it’s something that people of that generation can’t quite get to grips with.

Why are you judging them upon their image not their message. Totally missing the point. If one was a doctor and was saving your life would you still judge them then?

"They are trying to save the planet but have got crap songs so I am out"

The amount of fat old men on my facecock moaning about them as "bloody hippies" is incredible.

of course you can. But criticising and pointing out hypocrisy is the easiest thing in the world, and plays right in to the hands of those who want to do nothing.
