Current Affairs Climate Change Demonstrations.....

The protester inside that plane said "we have two generations of humanity left" due to climate change.

Given that is blatantly untrue, it does make me wonder how many of these protesters have any knowledge of the subject matter at all and how many are simply anarchists and rent a mobs.

Things are moving in the right direction with things like electric cars and renewable energy sources, but obviously a lot more needs to be done. I've got my reservations about the XR lot... a lot of them are off their heads and seem to be having a bit of a party.... how's that helping anything?

50 years is a long time, a lot can happen

A professor from King college, London on Radio 4 just now saying that some of ER demands are just way off the mark (time wise) but they have absolutely got the ball rolling. It is totally unrealistic to have all boilers changed by 2025 but that we indeed should be eating far less meat/dairy and flying less and using electric cars more as they have said.

Excellent work imo, people are indeed taking an interest in the situation.

Not in regards to climate change. Even in a model with the worst case scenario, humanity won't be extinct in two generations. Not even close.

The reality is this - the UK is negligible in terms of its' impact on climate change. Our government is already ahead of the curve in terms of measures to reduce carbon. There is little to no reason to protest in this country, when India and China exist and will do what they want regardless.

Climate change will happen regardless. The worst case is it's around 5 degrees higher at the end of this century - realistically, it'll be no more than 3. If we did absolutely everything in our power, and assuming climate science is correct in the first place, it'd still increase by around 2 degrees.

The better bet would be to focus on solutions to the problems climate change will cause, rather than focussing on "stopping it", which is impossible.

Posting the above to provide some balance.

The XR representative sent to speak to Andrew Neil doesn't stand up to any scrutiny at all. Lacking in credibility.

Urgh brutal. Andrew Neil really did well and simply makes the point that what they're saying is by and large nonsense.

This is the reason the likes of Greta Thunberg are used as a figurehead - she's held up on a pedestal and she's allowed to use alarmist, uniformed rhetoric to scare and influence because nobody is allowed to challenge her solely because of her age (you can't imagine Neil being allowed to interview Thunberg like this, and for good reason...)

I was kind of with you until that last bit. How do you propose we save the million endangered species and re-freeze the polar ice caps, glaciers, stop global temp rise, warming oceans, extreme weather events, acidification of the oceans ?

Mate, every country has to do it's part, if we lead others will follow. According to your logic we should just do nothing.

"
Hundreds of protesters have been arrested around the world so far as activists resist efforts by police to move them in the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia.

Extinction Rebellion said that more protests are planned in even more places in the coming days, including Gambia, Japan and Hong Kong."

No, my logic is that we should do something to combat the effects of climate change instead of pretending we can stop it in the first instance. We can't.

We don't combat old age by trying to invent immortality, do we? No, we put systems and measures in place to accommodate an ageing population, because ageing is inevitable.

As for other countries will follow? Why? We had our industrial revolution - what right do we have to say other sovereign states can't have theres? It's not like stopping nuclear proliferation - we can't argue against Iran having coal power plants like we can a nuclear weapon.

That's the geopolitical reality of climate change - it's happening, we can't stop it, the best we can do is somewhat moderate it and prepare for the median scenario, but that's not enough for these protesters, because they see the world in black and white - they want it irrationally stopped.
