I would say that is more likely than not.

Countries affected by it do seem to be getting a lot more active in defending their claims and calling China out in the last year or two, especially The Philippines, but since China is already defying the international court in regards to their claims, it is hard to see an easy end in sight

I agree, but the USA are backing the Philippines in this so who knows….

They are indeed, but as ever, China appears to be playing the long game.

Disrupt Philippine access to their outposts, block anyone who tries to go near the islands, inclincng fishermen, build artificial reefs and put military posts on them.

When everyone else is scared to go there, and they have completely militarised it, the entire South China Sea effectively becomes theirs.

The Western navies will still sail through. There will undoubtedly be a flashpoint, and while mobile ships can be sunk, static small islands have no chance…….

I think that there is enough time for Everton to get bought by a Chinese state backed conglomerate before the brown stuff hits the fan and we back a conflict in Asia that coincidentally sanctions our new owners.

China eh, still digging and using coal fired power stations, while us simpletons in the west are taking us into penury so that we feel good about about the climate, which neither they, India nor the USA gives a damn. China will take over the world because we will be so poor that they will just buy us……we are idiots, but can feel good for a few years because we recycle and have a green heart on our sleeve…….
stinking whataboutery, for such a simpleton, a past master....

So if that person doesn't recycle then why should you? That's your stance?

Pete if we maximised the use of renewables we’d have much more money, not less.

I’m sure that we would, but these things take time for the appropriate technology to be developed, and for a nation to still be financially afloat while going through what should be a gradual change. I’m fully on board with the aims just not the omnishambles of its implementation…..

The technology already exists Pete, it’s a matter of willingness and investment.

Every new home should be able to gather power (either directly via solar panels or communally via wind and solar) and be correctly insulated. Government can mandate this and people want to have that (especially if they are paid by the Grid for the electricity they put in).

China is leading the way in renewables also. I am going to be honest, the "China and US are still deep into fossil fuel usage so we should not bother " is playground stuff, literal kids argument.

I agree about every new home, and solar panel installation in new homes is a great deal better than just bolting them to an existing roof, ditto roof and wall insulation. However there are a great many homes for which this is totally impractical as they are old, solid brick or stone walls etc. the cost would be incredible……

100%, and whilst we are talking about geopolitics nothing would do more damage to the Russian economy than reducing fossil fuel consumption significantly.

If we freely shared the technology and manufacturing expertise with Africa, Asia and central / southern America then it would be of massive diplomatic benefit as well.

We aren’t even doing the first pete. We should, but we aren’t.
