Fitness and experience with their relatively new team-mates for squad players who are far more likely to see meaningful game time this season than Barkley?

Naismith has played 22 games this season and Hitzlsperger's contract expires in three weeks.

Naismith obviously needs more time -- unless we are going to completely give up on him. A goal in a game like this could give him some confidence -- didn't work out that way but it's a reasonable idea. Moyes obviously knows about Hitzs' contract so an extension seems likely.
