Championship Manager memories

I used to like signing young players for peanuts, developing them and then selling them on for massive profit.

I graded my performance by player trading profit more than league position or cup success.

Took Sangonera (a now defunct Spanish team) from part time to Champions League winners. Funnily enough I had Lukaku when he was still an unknown leading the line at one point. Had a regen striker called Per Modin who was the best player I've ever seen on the game.

Finding Maxim Tsigalko by accident on one save as well - netted 40 a season for three or four seasons on the spin.

Another striker I had called Giacomo Beretta who is nothing in real life but was sensational for me.

A long way back around 1998 I basically couldn't lose a game when I had Florian Maurice in the team. Was bizarre - in the end I had to stop myself signing him to stop breaking the game.

FM 05 - Winning the league with Everton by playing a 4-5-1 formation in my first season. Cahill was a footballing god for me.

FM 12 - Selling most of our good players like Fellaini, Osman and Baines, even Rodwell when the money was just too good to turn down, and then properly setting up my scouts to scout properly all over the world, signed some fantastic youngsters that I had never heard of who developed over a few seasons to the point where we'd go to Anfield and trounce them 5-0, before going on to comfortably win the league.

Fun times.

Stopped playing after that though TBH.

I always remember Henri Saivet was a ridiculously good wonderkid on one of the versions, would go on to be a 50+ goals striker after a few years, hasn't lived upto anything like that in real life lol.

Remember getting us to the final of the Champions League, only to get beat by Inter 3-1, Markus Bent scoring for us, felt like restarting an earlier save for ages.

Wesley Sonck, Emile Mpenza, Kerlon and Lulinha other players that I recall being great of various version, then pretty crap in reality.

Whenever I used to go Everton I’d sign expensive players and spread the transfer fees over 3-4 years. You could do it for a while and I was able to win the league and do well in the Champions League. That was until the board eventually sussed you out and you had more money going out than coming in, and you’d eventually get sacked. It was fun to see how long you could last.

I’ve banned myself from Football Manager games now though as they completely take over my life. I scraped through the first year or two of uni before jibbing it off and knuckling down. Too many times I found myself scrolling through player lists looking for bargains and playing until around 6am smoking joints until it was light outside.

Good times.

I used to do this all the time, but I'd get out in time before the financial troubles really started. Your annual transfer budget starts becoming less and less every season and when it becomes essentially nothing it's time to jump ship. I was essentially a better looking Harry Redknapp.

Signing and developing the youth is the best part of the game for me.

I have a spreadsheet that weights attributes for each role in my system and gives the player a score based on it (390 is a U21 player, 410 is ready for loan, 430 a bare minimum PL player, 450 average PL player, 470 very good PL player, 500 world class). At the end of every season I spend hours going through the playable leagues NewGens and signing the absolute best for buttons then bringing them through the system Worse case is you'll make €5m profit on a small outlay, best is you end up with Zorvan Skvirc, the best DC in the world, 195cm tall, mean as chuff, great with the ball at his feet, gay (which gives you a boost in commercial income) and his 15 year Everton career began with him signing aged 16 for €450k.

Anybody wants the spreadsheet, I'm happy to share.

FM12, had an Everton save where I won 30 odd trophies in 6/7 seasons. Big Chris Samba was my top scorer in one season, every 40 odd from a corner.

This is all despite the fact I almost bankrupt the club with free agent signings of Samuel Eto'o, Carlos Tevez, and Iaquo Falque. Every now and again I turn it on, see the team. Makes me well up.

FM08 when, if you instructed for corners to be aimed at the near post, you pretty much always scored from at least one corner a game with Samba, another boss player on attacking corners was Michah Richards. Them with Matias Fernandez and Obafemi Martins, could turn a mid-table team into serious challengers.

Am I the only one to commentate on matches and don a tie when reaching a cup final?

I wore the whole suit for a playoff final with my Carlisle team back in 2004 or so. Leyton Orient took the lead after 5 minutes then defended like 50s Inter Milan had signed Lev Yashin. I hurled a chair across the room and smashed a glass of water.

I stopped for about 10 years after that...

I forgot to post something like this in my OP. Nothing worse than someone spawning a win against you with 1 shot on goal when you've had about 40, and then realising it's been too long since your last save so you can quit and replay the game

I never replay. Thats bush league.

I sent this photo to my brother last week. My Everton team were unbeaten in 10. Villa hadn't won in 5. We lost 4 1. His response? "Champ Man gonna Champ Man"IMG-20200325-WA0002.webp
