Championship Manager memories

FM12, had an Everton save where I won 30 odd trophies in 6/7 seasons. Big Chris Samba was my top scorer in one season, every 40 odd from a corner.

This is all despite the fact I almost bankrupt the club with free agent signings of Samuel Eto'o, Carlos Tevez, and Iaquo Falque. Every now and again I turn it on, see the team. Makes me well up.

Cherno Samba, shirley?

Last years edition I went 16 seasons deep with my Everton team.

Freddie Beckwith (the only player who's name I put on a shirt and he's not real!)
Roland Charrier
Iuri
Callum Burnett
Sigurd Gronli

!6 years, 6 titles, 3 European Cups, a UEFA cup, 3 FA Cups and a League cup. I loved those boys and then my lapop died and they were lost forever...

How do the newer versions compare? The most recent one I had was 08/09 and I was terrible at it. Do you actually have to just be good at the game, or is it still possible to find one wonder formation that you can use with any team and win the lot?

Currently playing 01/02 with Roma. Just won the lot in my first season with only one league defeat, the front three of Batistuta Montella and Totti is just unstoppable. Signed Rio, Riquelme, Vieri and Mexes to take on the new season. Signed Taribo west on a free as well obviously!

Always Taribo West on a free. I always used to sign an Irish defensive midfielder called Derek Tobin whose value always shot up. Mike Duff too, but that might be the 97/98 version.

The AI on your own players and the oppo is much more advanced than on the old ones (I think every player makes a decision every 0.25 seconds). I've always been more of a man manager and a scout than a tactician and trainer but the tactics are a lot more flexible with roles within positions and so.

This years edition is the one that I have found most realistic in that the big 6 sides always, always find a way to spawn a victory over you and breaking up their cartel is super tough.

I just started my 5th season on this one and still haven't won anything or got champions league. Nearest was a UEFA cup final loss on penalties (pickford hitting the post).

All those boss players you could pick up for buttons that we see as cult heroes the makers see as data errors. Erling Haaland is the nearest I've seen to those levels on FM20 and he went to City for €150m in the first January window.

You can still get 01/02 for free on the internet and I've got a 2002 mod for the new one.

Mike Duff forever!

Great thread. My memory is slightly fuzzy but I believe it was the 03/04 version where you could watch the game as the players were all little circles running round. I would always sign John Carew and every corner would be a guaranteed goal, me and my brother chanting his name as he powers another header in.
Also an earlier version where Edgar Davids was going on a free and if you won the race to sign him with about 20 teams you were buzzing.
I claimed Carlos Tevez too, signed him as a wonderkid of Boca before anyone had ever heard of him then remember being shocked by how ugly he was when Wham signed him in real life after painting a picture in my had of a Latino heart throb.

Loaded up FM11 recently and did something I never usually do. Played as Everton lol. I usually go Ajax and build through youth like they do or some team in Spanish second division. Won the league and got to the CL final in my forth season at Everton. Too easy theres too much money in the prem. Got Varane, Casemiro, Douglas Costa, Griezman, Eriksen, Neymar, Lukaku, Hazard etc even with finances in a mess.

I'll have a look into the download then. The newer one sounds too difficult. I want to lead someone from League 2 to European glory.

I loved CM 01/02. Always signed:
Pawel Brozek
Alex Aguinaga
Vitaly Aleshchenko
Predrag Djodjevic

Everyone suggesting the names of incredible random players from other older games makes me want to try one.

Took Workington into the Championship before moving to Middlesbrough and getting them promoted, then going on to world domination with Arsenal over the next 20 years. Argentinian regen Gaston Brown absolutely banging them in and becoming the club’s all time top scorer. FM2011, one of the greats.

I'm currently running a non-serious game at the moment, after a four season serious one, where I used the editor/in-gate editor to give Everton an advantage.

He had a release clause in his contract in my name, and I got him for Everton for £60m* (I think it was that) and he literally bangs goals in for fun as well.

34 goals in 23/24 in my game.

Alex Iwobi is boss on the left as well, so it's not completely realistic.

Tom Davies has become an absolute enforcer in my last 2 saves as well. Absolutely bosses my midfield and is always criminally overlooked for international honours.
