Carsley - "Tim Cahill not an Everton legend"

It's not about who is the better player, if I was to pick who was the better player I would choose Pienaar. I think people would say Cahill is more of a legend because of his loyalty to EFC.

This ^

Can see how this debate will have legs, but surely at the end of the day 'legend' status is all relative. Everton's history has thrown up the likes of Dean, Mercer, Temple, Young, Labone, Ball, Kendall...and 'history' tends to bestow legend status. But from there where do we go? Southall, Ratcliffe, Reid, Sharp, Sheedy, etc may qualify because of their involvement in the most successful period in Everton's history. They were all loyal (and in many cases continue to be so), and highly respected for their overall contribution to the club.

At the end of the day it's going to be very personal to each bluenose, so we should allow that breadth of opinion and rejoice in the rich contribution of many Everton 'legends'. Each to their own, like, but some names will always be immortal.

If we did a poll "Pienaar vs Cahill, who is more of a legend", who do you think would come out with the most votes?

Look up the word ''legend'', then come back ,and tell me which story sounds more ''legendary'':

1) The average and one dimensional Aussie player signed from Millwall, who did nothing much to capture the imagination of the fans apart from scoring the odd goal with his head

or

2) The prodical son who returned to his spiritual home and rekinddled his devastating telephatic partnership with his mate Bainsey. The little maestro with braids who proudly showed off his '' God Is Great' T-Shirt'' after he ended Man United's title dreams at Old Trafford, this on his 3rd stint at the club. The little fella with a deep voice who shed a tear or two in an interview as he expressed deep regret for leaving his beloved Everton. The amiable lad who was chained to a pole in the dressing room by his teammates on his last day of his loan spell with us this year because they didn't want him to leave. That my friend, is the stuff that legends are made of.

(P.S :I will bookmark this and hopefully add: ''The genius that single handedly secured us Champions League Footie' in the 2012/2013' season).

So let's say Cahill was in the team during the 80's rather than now. Is he a legend now?

Wes Brown and O'shea were in the all conquering United side of '08. They are not,nor will they ever be Man United legends. Same applies for Cahill. Cult Hero, maybe ,as he is a player who isn't the main focus of a team, or definitely the best player in a side, but somehow still has a big following from a section of the crowd.Legend,NEVER!!!!

No. Dixie Dean, Alan Ball or Howard Kendall are Everton legends. He isn't in that category, so he isn't an Everton legend, he is only an Everton icon. Same category as Duncan Ferguson.

So I doubt you would pienaar in to the Legend category?

This is why it's key to always use the term "modern-day legend" when describing Cahill. Everyone knows you're talking about in recent history then, and not all-time.

With the greatest respect, Tim isn't an all-time legend. Big difference.

he,s selling dodgy second hand cars last i heard!!

Where...down Albert square way??

Lads who give a fcuk if he's a ledg or not.he is in some people's eyes and not in others.a great servant to the blues that's defo not in doubt.would like to see him back with Landon at Xmas

Move on lids, yer like a bunch of red****e kids thinking Allen is going to win the league for them this season!!

Thanks for the memories timmy

He's one of the most limited footballer i've ever seen. Sure, he's scored some crucial goals, but to
call him a legend, that's pushing it. Pienaar on the end will go down as one the all time greats
should he decide to re-sign and spend the rest of his career with us. And that's a fact btw.

You smell funny.

To be honest, the term 'legend' is bandied about much too freely - in ALL walks of life.

At the moment Tim is the nearest thing we have to one. :)

Legend can mean different things to different people.

Maybe Cahill doesn't tick every box associated with being a true 100% legend but to be fair he takes many a extra box that true legends haven't!

In my eyes he's a legend... Carsley commenets mean jack to me!

Think its important to differentiate between Legend and Cult Hero. for me Cahill is and always will be a cult hero. all pride and passion. A legend (for me) is someone who inspires those around him by leadership and example to achieve the highest attainments possible. Tim Iroegbunam will love forever, as a hero but not a legend.
