Marriner was excellent for 89 minutes - then what? He goes sleepwalking. Firstly he (finally) partially sorts out the running feud between Newcastle players & Cahill - seemingly over a late tackle by Cahill - then fails to contain the situation adequately - to the point where the continuing feud escalates to the point where Cahill - having been riled for the best part of 8 minutes - finally cracks and foolishly lifts his hands to an opponent. So, perhaps you might argue that's indefensible but the circumstantial evidence very much favours Cahill after significant provocation.
