Blue Union Board Angst

Yep. That's a very valid criticism when the orthodoxy amongst those who herald the new regime most tend to underline the need to sacrifice a big name to facilitate marquee players on mega wages who can make the difference.

To be honest, if Moshiri had come in and said "listen here's the deal: it's as you were in terms of player recruitment policy - after all, it's served us well enough in recent years so we can persevere with that; but in the coming seasons we'll add to the pulling power of the club by getting to grips with the way the club approaches commercial deals and, most of all, I'll be the difference in terms of turning stadium schemes from the drawing board and planning applications (which is where they've reached in the past) and see a very good, even iconic one, through to fruition".

If the feller had stepped up and gave an interview (in so many words) to that effect early doors he'd have had a lot of happy Evertonians nodding in agreement at that prospect. But it didn't go that way and the whole kit and caboodle has been hinted at being within our reach and now we see the beginnings of frustration.
Exactly. After years of Bill Kenwright we wouldn't have been hard to please but we just didn't want lies or BS.

Every home game which is not won is a dark day for our once great club and the team should be booed out of Merseyside on these occasions.
In fairness our home results lately have been shocking. In the past with Moyes we always had a good home record so less reason to boo.

I also think the style of play caused a lot of the frustration. The boos may now be limited to after the whistles.

Do you not think players would know the quality of our team?

Was it really that long a project if we signed 2 20m and 2 30 players without selling anyone. That's without selling and let's be honest there's plenty in the squad not good enough.

At the start of the window we had Lukaku, Barkley, Stones, Deulofeu, Coleman, Baines and arguably Mirallas, Jags. 4 top class players would have given us a first 11 that would have easily had a good shout of top 6 maybe even top 4.

I just don't buy the position in the table argument. Chelsea haven't had a problem and they only finished 1 place above us.

If we had money and a squad to be competitive this season then that's all players would have cared about.

However what happened was when we should have went big at the start and brought in a huge name and proclaimed Stones and Lukaku were going nowhere we instead acted like we had no money and were waiting to sell to buy whether that was the truth or not.

I know STCC might have forced the sale of Stones but we should have first got a marquee in and then sold him early and replaced him right away.

Instead we resigned Gibson and signed a backup GK from Fulham who now looks to be our number 1 after all.

You have to be able to convince these players to join, so far we've been unsuccessful. We bid the most for Witsel but he would rather go to a CL club. Chelsea don't have a problem because they just won the league 2 years ago and have been in the CL every season since the 2003-2004 season except for this season (including a CL win in 2011-2012). They are seen as CL regulars and have won trophies recently.

I think will get back to where we belong it'll just be a longer, more gradual process than rocketing to the top in one season as some seem to expect

I realize that but Carvalho wanted to come enough he sent us his ID. Apparently the press said we just refused to meet their valuation.
We should have moved on from Witsel. He wasn't good enough to put all our eggs in that basket. I would have tried to get someone like Sissoko from Newcastle. After the Euros I'm sure his standing in the game was pretty high.
I'm happy with Williams, again after the Euros his stock was high but Stones should have been sold 2 months ago and Williams bought then.

If we had started out the summer like that then we would be much happier bunnies right now just waiting on the Mata transfer.

All that was possible but it would appear we had to wait to extract the largest transfer for Stones to be sold before our window began. That's the part that makes no sense. However I'm not discounting Bill K's stinginess.

Chelsea are shopping in an entirely different market than us. They are going for top 2 players we are going with the likes of Witsel and Carvalho top 6 players. The kind of players Spurs and Liverpool recruit.

Again the league position doesn't really matter. It's the squad and the access to further investment that does. We had the squad what I think is we didn't convince them we had the investment.

And failing too.
Sissoko and Carvalho would have come if we spent the money. I'm certain of that. You may disagree and that's fair enough but I don't believe we would have a problem taking someone from Newcastle or someone who was keen enough to send in his ID and had a release clause preventing his club from stopping us.

Kenwright was just being a tight ass.

you're the one who brought up chelsea not having an issue recruiting due to last year's placing, I was just pointing out that they have shown more more recent success so from an outside player's perspective Chelsea gets the benefit of the doubt in regards to last year's finish being a one year fluke as they had 10+ consecutive CL seasons and a league title leading up to it. Sissoko is still at newcastle so he can't be in that high of demand and who knows if we even seriously went in for him. I think we're aiming for high quality players and have the money to do so, just haven't been able to convince them on the football side of things. I'm hopeful for Mata though as he's worked with Koeman before, lives in the NW, and is familiar with the Prem.

Before the last two season widely accepted to be the fault of the manager what were our league position finishes? Between 5th and 8th.

Witsel we weren't able to convince. A few others I think we just haven't been willing to pay the money.

I see Spurs as our benchmark, has there been anything in their approach (other than the London advantage) that we could look at and replicate?

They have built slowly and steadily and have been able to attract players of the calibre of Lloris, Vertonghen, and Eriksen, to name but a few.

There has been too much of a hang-up on "marquee" signings and the resultant dependency on attracting them (and sense of failure when we can't).

I am a bit surprised that we haven't made use of the continental European and South American markets more. There will still be a premium for English buying clubs but I find it hard to fathom that 4-5 players could not have been identified and signed. We clearly offered enough of a good proposition to tempt Lukaku to join permanently 2 years ago, admittedly that was off the back of 5th place finish, but league placings over an individual season is not the be all and end all.

The failure, if there has been one this summer, is that we have not created and built momentum by doing business earlier, and leaving the squad threadbare in some areas on the eve of kick-off.
