Billy's future

It looks to me like he has no confidence. He's no threat to the opposition whatsoever, whether he plays out wide or upfront. He's not getting in the positions to miss chances and he's not putting himself about to create openings for his teammates. I've said before that Moyes's philosophy is to let players play their way into form. Unfortunately, if there's a problem at the root of it, then that's only going to compound things. If I was Moyes I'd be planning on sitting down with Vic and working out what could be done. Maybe he needs to play alongside a physical partner like Yakubu? Maybe he needs a loan spell in the Championship? At the moment it's not looking like things are just going to click into place.

No pairing will make him any good at CF at the moment. For me he needs to play out wide for an extended period and get his confidence and fitness up. Or he needs to go on loan to a championship club or something.

The latter seems like a no-brainer, and I have no idea why he's never done so. Moyes sticks with him, but most annoyingly, he sticks with him up front. It's like Arteta and Saha last season; they were both playing poorly at CM and as a lone striker respectively, and it took him about 8 months to finally change their roles. And both changes heralded a u-turn in form.

That's Moyes for you. For all his good qualities, he won't change things if he can at all help it. Vaughan and Yak both did pretty well in the Championship last season. Hopefully Vic could benefit from a spell in the division and getting a few goals under his belt.

Hey, didn't Vic score against Birmingham or someone like that last season? I'm sure he has one goal...

That was the season before, mate.

Agreed. Well, not with any implication that loaning out Yakubu to the championship was a good move. But with the rest, yeah, I definitely agree.

It definitely wasn't last season. It was March 2010 at Brum, his only goal for that season. He also scored just 1 in 2008/9. The season before that was better- he bagged 5 goals in 41 appearances.

Yep.

In his defence though he did have a year out in the middle of all that, after getting Mario-stomped by Nolan.

At best he's 1 in 8 though. He's scored 2 goals in the last 3 seasons. It's hard to think of any forward with a worse record, even taking his injury into account.

There's a sh*t-ton of context though.

  • He's struggled with injuries before and after that big one.
  • Consequently he's got poor stamina and generally poor fitness levels, which he can't seem to build as he keeps getting injured.
  • The fans hate his guts and are on his back constantly. It's the same with Bily, and it really, really doesn't help.
  • He's constantly played up front, often on his own. We then resort to aimless longballs, and leave him isolated.

I still love that Vic is our all time third top scorer behind only Fred Pickering and Andy Gray. He's scored more than Latchford and the same amount as both Royle and Sharp.

If you only count goals scored in Europe.

I'm not sure whether he's got some genuine ongoing injury. He always seems to be holding his back. Perhaps he's trying to indicate to the fans that he's not fully fit? His decision making, for one thing, needs to dramatically improve. Against Brum, Bily played the ball up to him and wanted the return ball for a shot, but he ended up turning away from goal instead. I can't remember who it was against but he was in the box with his back to goal and a defender behind him. All his had to do was feign one way or roll his man but again he ended up beating himself. I would imagine that Moyes doesn't pick up on these things and coach him through them, because we see no real difference from game to game.

That's genuinely depressing for so many reasons.
